Question:

Did they charge us too much to repair our air conditioner?

The upstairs air condition had been blowing warm air during the afternoons so we called up an hvac technician to come assess the problem. It ended up costing us around $620 for parts and labor. The technician worked for about five hours (including the time spent to go and buy parts - $350), replacing the exhaust motor ($90), four freons ($80), and three space guards ($108), and he worked in extremely warm conditions in the attic where the unit's located if that affects the price of labor in any way. My dad wondered whether he overcharged us, especially for the parts, and if the overall cost seems reasonable? I don't think the guy ripped us off, but I just wanted to check with some definitive sources to assure my dad of the fact. Thanks for your input!

On a sidenote, my dad also got the water/pond pump in the pond replaced by the technician, $250 for the part. Does anyone know if that is a reasonable cost?

  1. it sounds about right to me for the ac   i assume it's working ok now, that doesn't sound excessive,i don't know about ponds or pumps.............tom

  2. Aircondition(licensed) charge about $50 per hour. From what you said what with pond pump and all it looks like he paid you.

  3. ~ 5 hrs of labor  plus a few hundred in parts plus his knowledge plus the service call and trip to get the parts.

Yea that's reasonable...It's expensive but what are you going to do?? Right?

Were you screwed?? Naa. It's expensive with some home repairs but I would keep his name and # for future service calls.

As for the pond pump? That all depends on what kind he purchased and the size of it.. I have 2 outdoor ponds and the pumps will cost 2-350 bucks a piece and that's with my discount.

  4. for 5 hours of work and buying parts, you got a deal. you say 4 freons, i guess you mean 4 lbs of refrigerant.  that my friend is quite a bargain.

as for the exaust motor, if you mean draft inducer, i dont know why he would have changed that for ac.  maybe it was the blower motor and if thats the case, that should have been  around 190 for parts only.

i dont know much about pond motors so all i can say is if he did everything he said he did, rest assured, you didnt get ripped off.

  5. Parts and freon sound about right....labor sounds a little high...but put yourself in his shoes.....how much would you charge to work in a hot attic???? I wouldn't do it for any less than $70 hr...so that comes out to $375 for labor...so it is about right.

Now for the pump...what size pond pump did he replace. I just replaced a 2 1/2 HP spa pump for under $200....this one I think is too much.

  6. They charge way too much man.

They just about cheated you out of your money .

    Thats terrible what they charge.

    ):!!!!

  7. seems reasonable to me
