I think he was totally right in saying that he cannot believe it (that he was freed)

  1. Interestingly enough, I've just finished reading Jeffrey Archer's book about the first few weeks of his imprisonment when he was in Belmarsh prison. In the book, written some years ago, he writes that both the prisoners and the prison staff thought Barry George was innocent and that agreement coming from two polarised viewpoints would tend to make me agree with this decision. That and the willingness of the police to cut corners when a high profile and highly media covered case is in place. Remember that poor backward guy in Lancashire who was stitched up as a child killer?

  2. Isn't it about time we stopped listening to the media on cases like this. Jill Dando was their baby and they were like a pack of mad hounds. Just thank your lucky stars that you did not get in their way. History is littered with innocent people being torn to bits and hanged by these so called up holders of the law. Remember they want to sell as many newspapers as possible. It's all financially driven.

  3. In my opinion he did it. What sickens me is that he is now in line for massive compensation!

Not being able to prove conclusively that he did it is not the same as proving he didn't do it! I am quite amused by the conspiracy theorists though.

Dr Watson, how can the shooting to death of a woman on her own doorstep be "slick and classy" What a repulsive statement!

  4. I think not! And it is my considered opinion that it is times like this that I'm agreement with the abolition of the death penalty.

I think that Jill Dando was murdered by someone out to seek revenge for what ever reason and that she knew her murderer.

  5. It was always a dodgy conviction typifying the British police mentality of "getting a result" rather than seeking justice.

  6. In my opinion I think they certainly did have the right man, there is overwhelming circumstantial evidence, unfortunately the legal system rightly defends people who it cannot PROVE committed the crime, there just wasn't enough positive proof.

You will see the results of my opinion by the amount of effort now put in by the police to finding someone else!!

  7. Our judicial system has decided that he was not the right man and, the way things work, we have to accept the decision.

I seem to remember that at the time, there was a fair amount of evidence against him.

It looks as if we shall never know the real answer and I have even seen it described recently, as "the perfect crime".

  8. I agree with Nettie.  The murder was far too slick and classy for it to have been George - as far as Barry George goes, the police simply didn't present the case well - all evidence circumstantial which either means he was innocent or the police botched the case.

  9. The question is perfectly legitimate and so is answering the question, but isn't it utter stupidity when respondents state "I think he did it...", "I don't think he did it...", ”I think he lives in Marbella" Why not mention the full address? Who the heck do they think they are? They don't have all the facts. The complete files are never disclosed in such cases. All the public knows about this case is through the biased media. Far too often it appears that the police have acted inaccurately and unprofessionally. It is about time their work is scrutinised by an independent body.

ADD: It is of course beyond doubt that the judge in this case acted rather naively. He should have listened to Mr Archer’s prison mates, as busterdomino seems to suggest.

  10. the courts said he was innocent

  11. He has been found not guilty after a retrial, so clearly they did not have the right man.

Personally, I always felt that the conviction was unsafe as it was based entirely on circumstantial evidence.

It seemed to be a case of making the crime fit the suspect!

I hope he receives a significant amount of compensation, he is going to need it to enable him to stay safe from the opinions and actions of those who won't accept the courts judgement.

  12. Barry George was your typical "Patsy"......The Person who orded her Murder will no doubt live in Marbella......gang-land killing for sure.....

How many times do the police choose to arrest the "Village-idiot"?.....

He has been cleared of any wrong doing and that should be good enough....Hope he get's the compensation he deserves.....
