The rapid downsizing of the U.S. armed forces after the surrenders of Germany and Japan in 1945 brought back millions of servicemen and servicewomen to the United States from overseas in the mid-1940s, many of whom were coming of age and anxious to establish their independence, attend college, get married, and raise children."


  2. Early travel trailers were often homemade, more often constructed by small, regional manufacturers. During the Depression of the 1930's, these units became more than recreational shelters when thousands of itinerant workers used them as housing when they moved from job to job. Trailer manufacturing became a booming business as travel trailers became larger and featured more amenities, still mobile but comfortable enough for year-round residency. House trailers had arrived.
