Question:

Did they really change my oil?

I checked my dipstick around the block after visiting Jiffy Lube and it was black. They said that that happened because I have a diesel engine. Is that true?

  1. and how long was it after they  did this should have stayed clear for a few days to a week maybe.. but if it was in a few minutes go back and tell them to fix it or you will call the cops and say one of them if the oil is clean or not,,,, they didnt do it sorry

  2. AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants are designed and engineered for extended drain interval service. The color the AMSOIL on your dipstick (or ANY oil for that matter) has absolutely no bearing on whether or not the oil is suitable for continued use or if it should be drained and replaced. Use the recommended change intervals for both the oil and engine oil filters as specified by AMSOIL.

It is a common misconception that an oil's color is an indication of how dirty it is. This is absolutely NOT TRUE. The color of an oil does not have any bearing on its lubrication ability. Most oil and especially diesel engine oil will turn black in the first few hours of operation due to contaminates generated by the combustion process and soot particles. The ONLY way to accurately determine an oil's lubricating value or contamination level is through (spectrographic) oil analysis. Oil analysis is common practice used regularly in commercial, industrial and fleet operations and can also be used for passenger cars, light trucks or any other application. In addition oil analysis will also determine the exact pars per million (ppm) of wear metals in your oil which provides an indication of any abnormal wear or specific components that need mechanical inspection in addition to checking for any fuel, water or glycol contamination. *At the end of this section you will find a listing of what oil analysis testing checks for.

The useful life of an engine oil is dependent on several factors such as the quality of the oil, type of fuel, equipment condition, type and operating environment of the equipment and, most important, the type of filtration used. The filtration system and the oil are vital tools for preserving engine life. A highly efficient filter is essential to protect an engine by removing both liquid and abrasive contaminants held in suspension by a high quality premium oil such as AMSOIL. When using AMSOIL Synthetic Lubricants for extended drain intervals the AMSOIL Absolute Efficiency Oil Filter must be changed at 25,000 miles/1-year for gasoline or diesel powered engines under normal service conditions

  3. No. New oil should look amber in colour, and you should be able to see through it. Dirty oil looks black. It doesn't matter what type of engine you have. They didn't change your oil. Go back and ask for a refund...and get your oil changed somewhere else!

  4. It should take a few miles to turn it black. Diesels do turn it black sooner than gas engines but it will take a few miles to do that. Next time check it right there before you leave the shop. Check the filter to see if it has been replaced. A new filter will stick out like a sore thumb.

  5. I see different opinions here.  I think the best idea is to take a look at the oil filter.  As has been said, a new one will stand right out.  No road grime on it.

  6. No!

  7. NO

it should not be black.  it should be a clear light brownish

if you get no results with the manager than call headquarters

your not the first one that had problems with Jiffy Lube.  the majority of the workers just graduated high school with very little or no training

  8. Wet black they did

  9. i worked in a jiffy lube for 14 years and i have the low down in what goes on. yes the oil was changed, but diesel gets very dark/dirty very quickly. in a quick lube shop, you are given less than 8 minutes to do the entire checklist. oil does drain pretty quickly, but you can let it trickle for 45 minutes and get another half a quart out. this does not change any thing. as i said before, the oil was changed but in a diesel, the oil is always very dark. watch the service as it is done next time, you might be surprised at what is done.

  10. No, the oil on the dipstick should not be black from going around the block.  Check it every time after an oil change.  Buys at one Jiffy Lube store left the oil plug loose years ago.  Never went back.  They concentrate so hard on speed and speed and good service don't go in the same sentence very well.  Does the oil filter look clean?
