When one parent has full custody of a child and the other has to have court supervised visits with the child does that parent lose any rights to the child? Like making decision for the child, etc? If that parent doesn't lose rights please explain why. Why would the court trust that parent to make any good decisions for the child if he/she cannot be trusted alone with the child? Thanks.

  1. There is a difference between physical custody and legal custody. It sounds like in your scenario, one parent has full physical custody and they both share legal custody.

There could be court supervised visits due to past behavioral problems or a lifestyle that demonstrates a credible danger to the safety of the child. That wouldn't mean that the non-custodial parent should not have the right to make a medical or legal decision on behalf of the child.
