I didn't know that. Here's one for ya. The first vehicle to reach 100 mph occured in 1900. It was a locomotive. I'm an engineer now, and if I lived in 1866, I don't know what I'd do. But it probably wouldn't be engineering. They had to be away for many days at a time. There weren't any rules about maximum number of hours trainmen worked in a day, and I've read old writings about trainmen working round the clock for 2 and 3 days straight, napping in the locomotive cab at station stops. These working conditions were the primary factor in organizing the railroad unions.
