It seems as if it is a right of passage survive your first crash on the old family sedan then go out and buy a car you want. I advocate the proper instruction of young drivers. Car control is the most important thing you can teach your kids.

No. I sold my first car for 10 times what i bought it. I've only had 2 accidents in 10 years and they were both very minor.
