  1. Great question!  Let's take a look at how both these players were playing together:

Player  PPG  APG  RPG    SPG  BPG  TPG    A/TO

    Carter- 20.5   5.2     5.58    1.00    .35     2.4      2.15

    Kidd-    11.3  10.3    8.1      1.45    .29     3.6      2.88

As you can see, both players were having great seasons before the trade.  However, when one looks at their three-year averages, both players were below in PPG, SPG, and BPG.  As you can see, their scoring and ball-hawking skills were down, but Both were doing better than their 3-year-avg in APG.  Kidd was rebounding better than in the past three years.  However, his Assist:Turnover ratio was lower than usual, while Carter was higher in that category.  So their scoring was down and they were half-step slower on defense, but they were passing the ball more and in Carter's case, his AST:TO was higher than his 3-year avg.

After the trade, this is how both players did separately

Player  PPG  APG  RPG    SPG  BPG  TPG    A/TO

    Carter- 23.8   4.9     7.2       1.61   .57     2.3      2.13

    Kidd-    9.8     9.6     6.4       2.46   .46     3.0      3.21

Carter's PPG game average went up and was one point shy of reaching his three year avg.  His APG was still hovering around 5.  His Rebounding went through the roof.  He's never finished a season with 7+ boards/game. His steals were much better than before Kidd and easily surpassed his three-years (Carter's never finished with higher than 1.6 SPG in his career).  Even his BPG was significantly higher when Kidd was gone and stayed on pace relative to his three-years.  A/TO was about the same when Kidd was around, but easily way above his three-years.

Kidd on the other hand, saw a decrease in PPG, APG, RPG, but his steals and blocks per game shattered his three-year and was able to cut back on his turnovers, making for a better A/TO ratio.  However, it is worrisome that the great Jason Kidd's APG dropped in Dallas and he's always been a great rebounding guard.  6.42 is great for a guard, but his three-year avg was at 7.65.  Perhaps Kidd was still learning on a new offense, with new teammates, and a new environment.  A full season should remedy any dips in averages, but he will be 35 to start this upcoming season and the league is full of quick point guards waiting to feast on Kidd's old legs.

Carter, on the other hand, was reborn when Kidd was gone as you saw from the stats above.  Perhaps he figured he was the new #1 alongside Richard Jefferson.  Perhaps the arrival of Devin Harris as the new point guard had an effect (a quicker, younger guard with raw talent and fearless intangibles must've impressed Carter).  At 31 years of age, he has already seen a decrease in dunks (according to a Sports Illustrated article on dunking), but is still athletic and crafty enough to score points.  The APG, SPG, and TPG are similar marks he was able to reach while he was in Toronto and pretty much was a one man show up in Canada (Tracy McGrady was still a developing player and mostly came off the bench in Toronto in his first three years).

If those stats after Kidd left are any indication, Carter can still be a relevent figure in the NBA.

  2. I think the team got better and the Mavericks got worse.

  3. well... he had to take over the team when J-Kidd did leave. He's always been good... but he always had another superstar w/ him... except in da middle of his "raptor" years. SO i just say.. dat he just "came out" when J-Kidd left.
