some still say that Montell could have gotten up but chose to "act" hurt and take a DQ victory knowing Jones would win had he continued to fight.

your opinion?

  1. You can't fault Griffin for staying down, I remember the fight vividly, and he was on his way to getting KOd.  He looked up at the ref AFTER taking the second shot while on one knee (a left hook) then just laid down until they rang the bell.

I don't agree with the DQ, because 1. the ref was very late to separate them when Griffin took the knee (his daughter was also the only judge that had Griffin ahead at that point in the fight by the way); and 2. Griffin should have just been give up to the max to recover, like a guy hit low or after the bell.

I was at the rematch, and it probably would have been better for Griffin's legacy to have just been stopped in the 1st fight and then move on.

  2. nope because if anyone knew any history on montell he was always notorious for hitting people from that position so roy was justified by his actions

  3. i didnt like the call but agreed with it.you cant hit a guy when he is down.thats the bottom line.

  4. montell griffin took the cowards way out he knew he couldn't win so he made any excuse to get out of there before getting embarrassed but in doing so caused himself more embarrassment what was he thinking. he should av gone out on his shield like a true warrior with his honour and dignity intact and all he had to do was fight back win or lose that games respect like the roy jones vinny paz

  5. I do not agree with it, it was a robbery. Regardless of whether the punch came too late it was obvious griffin wasn't going to win, if he didn't get knocked out in that round it would have happened eventually. I think the rematch made that clear.

  6. That was a tough call.  Here is a prime example of boxing rules being lame-brained.  I've seen a lot worse go unchecked.  I think that instance called for a point to be penalized and Griffin given up to 5 minutes to recover.

According to the specific rules of boxing, you have to agree with the decision to DQ Jones, a downed fighter needs to be protected.  The 9 seconds on the canvas belongs to him.  It's virtually impossible to perfectly ref a fight, and sometimes there is a question as to whether a fighter is down.  Roy got caught in that limbo and lost the fight.

  7. Thumbs up to Peter H.

Anyway, that disqualification was horrible for the reasons that Peter H mentioned. I'm not just saying that because I'm a big Roy Jones fan. I'm saying this, because Montell Griffin brought out something that I've always wanted to see out of Jones. I had always wanted to know how well Jones could handle adversity and I thought Griffin was giving Jones just that and was the first to do it. Jones showed he could deal with it as he was on his way back to taking over the fight.

I thought the referee should have simply deducted a point in a fight in which I had Jones losing to begin with, which would have made things even more interesting. Then the ref should have given Griffen up to five minutes to shake off that late blow.

I felt robbed of the chance to see what Jones could do from behind.
