Did you attend your high school class reunion?

I'm wondering how much the cost was to attend your's. My 10-year is this Saturday, and the charge was quoted as $20-30 per person, which was to include appetizers and an open bar. Now I've come to find out that the cost has been set at $30 per person, and it will be a cash bar. The committee was going to get a tent if we were to be expecting inclement weather because the event is being held outdoors. Tent rental is $1,000. According to weather.com, it's supposed to be sunny and 83 all weekend through Tuesday, and FOR SOME CRAZY REASON, they still plan on getting this tent.

I know all the details because my best friend is on the organization committee. Kara, a girl from my class that has declared herself queen/final decision maker for the reunion, has decided to still charge people $30 per person so that any left-over money can be put aside for future reunions. She decided we needed a band, not a DJ. She picked the place and all the appetizers being served, the most expensive on the menu. $95 for a vegetable tray?!?! Crab cakes, asparagus wrapped in beef tenderloin, imported cheese tray, a few things nobody knows how to pronounce, so therefore I'd never eat them. All of these appetizers we're near $100 per tray. My friend suggested doing cheaper apps to keep the cost down for everybody, like chicken wings, which were $45 per tray. What's the point in getting all fancy with crudites? Why not just serve a full meal then if the point is to be all uppity and impressive? But NOOOOOOO...this suggestion was just unacceptable to Queen Kara, and she gave it the big VETO.

Oh, she also decided that her mom would be the guest speaker. Her mom was our assistant principal that everybody hated. Her mom's job was to be a disciplinarian, and boy was she good at it. I was in her office at least once a week. Haha! I mean, I know it's been 10 years, but still, why would anybody care to see her mom, let alone listen to her speak. My friend suggested a few different teachers or guidance couselors that everybody loved, but nope. Kara wants her mom to be the speaker, and what Kara wants, Kara gets, despite other people's wishes.

Does all this sound completely ridiculous and unacceptable to anybody else, or is it just me?

  1. Yes I attended my reunion.  I had a good time.

  2. $30 FOR A CLASS REUNION IS A BARGAIN!

My 10 year reunion was at a local banquet hall.  We had open bar, DJ, sit down dinner.  It was $75 per person.   (That was in 1995)

My 20 year reunion (in 2005) was at a different restaurant with banquet room.  That one was open bar, DJ, buffet dinner - the standard stuff: pasta, chicken, roasted potatoes, salad, veggies, sliced beef, some kind of fish, etc.   I believe that the cost for the 20 year reunion was also about $75 per person.

Honestly, if you have a problem with the arrangements that are being made for your class reunion, the thing to do is to get yourself on the committee that makes the decisons.

  3. I went to my 10 year reunion last year and it cost 65 dollars just to attend and it was not an open bar.  Therefore, I believe that 30 dollars is really not that much to ask for.

I hope this does not come off as being harsh, but if you wanted to have a say in what is being purchased for the reunion then you should have requested to be on the board.  As far as the speaker goes... who really cares who it is.  Most people will be talking to their friends and will not be paying any attention to what she has to say anyways.

If it were me I would forget about the petty stuff and just fork over the 30 dollars and have a great time!  I know I sure did at mine :)

  4. I was unable to attend my class reunion, not over food and speakers, but had to finish shooting a skate video and competed in a skate comp that same weekend.

Mine had a different schedule than most, as there were multiple events throughout the weekend

    Fri afternoon - Golf, $37

Fri eve - Pay as you go food and drinks at a local sports bar

Sat noon - Picnic bring your own food

Sat evening - $45 appetizers and cash bar and live band

The point of a class reunion it to catch up with the people you attended high school with.  It sounds like you are carrying a bit of a grudge with the queen and might be a bit jealous of her even after 10 years.  I agree that her inflexibility and poor judgment might have lead to dissatisfaction from you and others in your class, but that should not be enough to spoil and evening.  You can relish in the fact of people changing for the worse.  You never know who gained 50lbs and lives in a trailer.

  5. Sounds pretty lame to me.  I wouldn't go if it were my reunion.  I keep in touch with those classmates from high school I want to keep in touch with.  s***w the rest of those losers!   Sounds like that girl Kara hasn't moved past high school anyway.

  6. That sounds really weird. My reunion was this year and I didn't go because I was unpopular and have no reason to see anyone from then again. But I know that there was an entire committee that made decisions about the events, and I think that they contacted the attendees for votes about them too. I don;t understand why the entire class is letting this one girl run everything if it's not what everybody else wants.

  7. why waste time seeing people you never talked to in high school how stupid and lame it is
