Did you decide what job you wanted before or after reciving your G.C.S.E's?. I'm going into year 11 and last year the teachers expected us to have decided already. But I really don't know yet!! I havn't given it a thought! What do I do if when I go back a teacher goes down the register and asks everyone to announce what they will do after school? Should I decide soon?

  1. Don't stress out about it too much.

I'm about to start my AS levels, and I still don't know what I want to do - along with the majority of my friends.

Just make sure to choose a wide range of subjects to keep your options open.

  2. I decided before, but I knew what I wanted to do since yr5. But don't stress about it, worrying won't help you come to an answer. In your school there should be a careers adviser, and they will sit with you and discuss it with you. They will ask what sort of lessons you most enjoy doing and what your interests and dislikes are. They may help you come to a decision or get a better idea of your career path. But don't worry - some people get all the way to finishing university and still have no idea what they want to do. The teachers shouldn't be pressurising you and if they are, talk to your teacher and explain your situation. Go onto some career advice websites. My sister is in the same boat as you, so keep calm and just enjoy school as it comes. Always try your best, because when you do decide what you want to do, you have to make sure you have the grades for it. Good luck. :)

  3. Well I don't think you are alone right now because there are wide majority of people who are over 16 and couldn't decide what they would want to do after leaving school. But incase you do decide to do what you do want to do, make sure you work very hard on your GCSEs as they are very important. You'll understand why later on.

But if you didn't get the grades as expected then don't worry about it because there are plenty of other options to take.

  4. Hey i am going into year 11 too and i still have no idea what i want to do.

My school recommended we signed up to planit.net

Its really good because you can take a quiz about what you are good at and enjoy and then it'll give you an answer telling you the kind of jobs your good at.

Good luck - I know how you feel. lol. :)

  5. I think its a good to have a little idea of what possible careers you want to do. Having said that no ones going to kill for not really being sure. There are people who are going to uni without what actual career there going to do.

I think you should surf the internet and look at different courses and careers.....if you go on jobs4u.com you can see all the possible jobs and the qualifications that you need. You shouldn't be worrying like h**l right just make sure that what ever you study and do that you enjoy and that you go into a career in the future without knowing whats its really about.

  6. I had an idea of what I wanted to do when I chose my subjects at the end of year 9 which have changed slightly over the 2 years but is still along the same lines (languages teacher to translator) and i had chosen my subjects with that in mind. However most of my friends didnt know and chose subjects they liked.  Now we are starting 6th form and my friends still dont know what they want to do but have chosen subjects which 1. they like and 2. dont narrow their options too much.  So it doesnt matter that you havent decided what you want to do yet .. youll figure it out at some point!! And you have plenty of years to do so .. as long as you do well in maths and english the world is your oyster! Good luck with the GCSEs! :D

  7. I decided before, because I think it helps give focus to your studies. For instance, if you decide you want to go to a certain university to study a certain course with a view to a certain career, you might find you need so many GCSEs at a certain grade, and you can plan for that.

Having said that, it often doesn't matter massively what GCSEs you get, as long as you get a good number of 'academic' ones - most employers look at the number and the grades, not really at the subjects. They just want to see you have a bit of brain going on and can apply yourself! (Though obviously it would help a lot to have certain GCSEs for certain jobs, such as English to go on and study journalism, maths to study accountancy or whatever.)

Why not come up with a shortlist of possible jobs, and then throw the question back at the teacher - ask them, if you were me, with my skills and attributes, what would you say would be best suited to me out of these 3 ideas?
