Yeah when I was about 10. I tried to make a bat out of my neighbours fence post. I nearly broke my wrist trying to hit the ball.

Bat, yes.  Ball, no.  I am American and don't play cricket.  We used corporal punishment in high school, back before it was banned.  Cricket bats made the best paddles for such purposes.  A teacher ended up "losing" his and I was tasked to make a replacement in wood shop.  It was fun.

Edit: I never did get smacked with my own bat.

Of course.  When you grow up poor, you have to make so many things.  I remember playing rugby with a lemon - yeah as crazy as that sounds.  Kids from one half of the street versus the other half.  It was all make believe and we were all the sporting heroes of the day - the fact that we made up most of the rules as we went along also added to the fun.  It was sheer mayhem, but a whole lot of fun!!!

In todays society, where sport goods are cheaper and more freely available (although you pay for quality and robustness), it is easier to get some stuff - but making your own has its very own intense magic.

When you get older, you can find ways to pay for a real bat and ball - but in the meantime, have as much joy as you can get with what you have at hand.
