Did you ever take real good care of a fish until it actually died of old age?

It's really rare, huh? Most people can't even take care of a goldfish longer than a couple weeks. My oldest fish ever was actually a common goldfish, but it only lived for 7 years (goldfish can live for 25+ plus years). it had tumors. Now, I'm taking care of a trimac cichlid which is 12 inches and 3 years old right now and I raised it since it was a 2 inch baby. How 'bout you?

  1. I wish I could say it. I've only ever owned one fish, my current Betta which I bought from some pet store. Of course, when I first got him, I was so sure I was going to be an amazing pet owner and all that. But like many others, I probably shouldn't have gotten one. My family soon got other animals, we had 4 large dogs, 2 cats, a Russian Tortoise, 4 , and 1 african aquatic frog. But unlike many of our other pets, the betta can't make some loud bark when something is wrong. So although he is still alive after 2 1/2 years of mediocre at best pet care, he is now sick (I even asked a question up here) ....I guess some people shouldn't own fish. I can honestly say, I am most definitely one of those people.

Also for your question- I think that many people like me underestimate the care they need, I actually view them as a hard pet to own compared to say, a dog because yes they too need to be fed, but they need other things like water filtering and won't tell you. When something's wrong, a dog will tell you. Trust me ;)

  2. i had a blue male betta fish live for 3 1/2 years. he was a good ole' boy :)

  3. What's funny is that few people actually know how long their fish will live, so they come here and ask "I've had my fish for 5 years and it suddenly died, what did I do wrong?" Any time a fish dies they assume there's something wrong with their tank. I would guess that it's fairly common for fish to die of old age, but no one knows that's what really happened.

  4. well I've had a lot of fish but none have lived longer than 2 years! so now i have 5 fish in a big tank and they all seem healthy.

  5. I had a catfish that lived for six years and he was one of the first fish I've ever had but he died last year.
