Did you have any idea how noisy windmills are?

I didn't. Now I'm not so sure I'm for them in their present incarnation. I deliberately don't live in a highly populated area specifically because I can't abide the constant noise levels.

Surely, a wind turbine can be made noiseless?

  1. there pretty quite accually. but they have these mute things that if there is any noise then it will stop it.

  2. Maybe they should have mufflers to silence their incredible din.

  3. if  the size  makes a difference, I would  say  the  bigger  ones  are  more  offensive,  more  blade,  more  impact.

sound  measured  in  decibels  may  not  show  the  full  spectrum  of  vibrations  emanating  from  these  machines.

at  the  risk  of  sounding  fanatic,  the likely-hood  that,  the  effects  the  wind-mill has on  the  environment,  are  more, " far reaching" than we  know about today, is just about guaranteed

Just  as  claustrophobia, does not  affect  all  peoples  the same,  noise  of  differing  frequencies  and  volumes  will  give  one  man a head-ache, and  for me,  well,  maybe  something  a  little  more  fatal.

  4. i would like to believe they aren't noisy but i stand to be corrected.

  5. Anyone who says a windmill is loud is either repeating something they heard from another, was close to one of the bird chopper types (small or fast turning) or was next to a malfunctioning one.   Windmills all over Germany and I never heard one of them making any noticeable noise.   They were  mostly the 1.5 - 5 megawatt ones so they turned at a slow  3-15 RPM.

  6. Yes, my parents and I lived in Tehachapi, Ca. about a half mile from the wind farms. We wouldn't hear the noise all the time, but sometimes at night, when everything was quiet, one could hear a constant, low thrum from the giant windmills there. The frequency was so low you didn't hear it all the time, but when and if you noticed it, it was very difficult to sleep.

We had some mills of our own and they never posed a problem for us noise wise. I think the problem comes in when there are so many adjacent to each other and they form a sort of chorus with each other.

My advice for anyone thinking of buying property near a wind farm is to make sure you are at least a mile away from them. I am not sure that they would be able to completely eliminate the noise even with mufflers and such. IMO, it is the sheer volume of mills at the windfarms that is the problem. One or two on your property are no problem at all. Efficient and clean energy, but they do require a lot of maintenance.

I do though, disagree about them being an eyesore. I thought they were beautiful to look at.

  7. My windmill is gasoline powered and has a muffler on it that is piped into the local creek so I hardly hear it at all.

  8. No they do not really not that noisy. The new versions that come out are really quiet.
