Did you hear Oprah's going vegan?!?

I just read today that Oprah Winfrey is going vegan! I think that is great but, at the same time I am scared. If she likes the experience I am sure many of her viewers will try veganism but, if she doesn't like it, her viewers will probably not give it a try. But, she is also swearing off alcohol, sugar, gluten, and caffeine so it is a little bit more strict than just being a regular vegan. She is doing a 21 day detox, so far she said she likes the meals she has been having. I hope she likes it and continues to do it- that would be awesome! What do you think?

  1. I think that it is gimmicky and will miss some of the most important points of veganism. if it encourages people to cut out animal products than that is great, but how long will that last if Oprah is only doing it for 3 weeks?

  2. Oprah is doing a 21 day detox that is suggested in a book that she has read by Kathy Freston.  The book is called Quantum Wellness and I want to read it ASAP.  I saw her when she was on Oprah and she sounds like she knows what she's talking about.  She believes in what she calls conscious eating which includes veganism.  She is a very articulate woman who put into words what veganism means to her and the word's touched Oprah and opened up her eyes.

On the show, Oprah said that she was thinking about becoming vegetarian.  She made no commitment, but said that she is seriously considering it.  I was so excited when I heard that!  I really hope that she decides to go forward with the decision and eventually to transition completely into a vegan.  This single person would have such a positive impact on encouraging others to be vegan.

    We'll see...

  3. Yes, I heard about that.  I hope her 3 week experience as a vegan is a positive experience for her, and that she continues to eat that way and hopefully inspires others to do the same. Her website now includes some good vegan recipes, although they contain a few hard-to-find ingredients.

  4. I read about this on usatoday this morning. She says she is doing it based off of some books she has read as well as wanting to actually see if her body "feels" differently. She is currently on week one and says she enjoys the foods. I think it is cool that she is trying it out, no harm no foul to me. Oprah has a huge following and I think it will give light to how GREAT vegetarian dishes actually are. I don't know if she will 100% continue the lifestyle but I do think that she will be eating vegan possibly a few times a week and starting to limit her intake of red meats & chicken. That's my prediction!!

  5. I'm not a vegan, but at the recommendation of a friend (I'm trying to lose weight for my wedding!) I tried a vegan diet for 3 days, and I felt kind of deprived. I went back to a mostly pescetarian diet, which I don't feel nearly as deprived on, haha. I might try the vegan thing again close to the wedding, so I won't feel so bad about all the horrible fatty things I'm eating on my honeymoon!

But as for Oprah... her doing this is fine, she can make her own decisions and whatnot... but I think you're definitely right about if she decides she hates it, it could deter a lot more people from even trying to eat healthier. Let's just hope she doesn't kill the healthy food movement single-handedly. ;)

Being vegan was pretty difficult for me, but she's giving up gluten AND caffiene??? I'd die. Seriously.
