Question:

Did you know it's still legal in some US states to "paddle" disobedient kid in school?

One child, three years old, was struck with a paddle for "untying his shoes". Many times, parents are not aware that children can be hit legally by their teachers-- and if they do sign a slip saying their kid isn't to be paddled, often that slip is ignored. Minorites, males, and disabled children are paddled the most

Coming from an abusive childhood, I can't believe that anyone in their right mind could hit a kid. There are plenty of ways to deal with kids rather than hitting them with a piece of wood! All abuse causes is pain, fear, and hatred-- and it totally kills your self-esteem. It can make you hate yourself.

How can this still be legal? What is wrong with people?

  1. Spare the rod and spoil the child. The kids of today have no respect for human life or other peoples property. This problem started with whiners like you saying we should not chastise children.

  2. No I didn't know, and I can believe that people in they're right mind can hit a kid. And they, did not die did they? They're still alive and they learned they're lesson, didn't they? Now I'm not saying that abuse is right, but there is a difference between discipline, and abuse. Beating the living cr*p out of a child, that's abuse. But discipline your going to hit that kid and from then on they'll realize. You know, I don't think I'm going to do that anymore, because every time I do, I'm disciplined. That's the way we learn. Now, your last remark "Maybe we should start paddling cruel parents instead..." you don't have to worry about that too much. Most parents do what you want them to do, use the plenty of other ways to discipline, or don't discipline at all. This will sometimes lead to the kid beating up the parent.

  3. Sadly, a lot of things happen to children that shouldn't. I personally don't believe in spanking, even though a lot of my family disagrees. My daughter sits in time out. And as for the guy above, "Spare the rod, spoil the child" doesn't have to be taken so literally. It can simply mean that by not disciplining your child, you are leading them in the wrong direction. Not everything in the bible is meant to be taken literally.

When I heard this on the news today it gave me a pit in the bottom of my stomach. And if I ever found out a school went against my wishes and laid a hand on my child...h**l hath no furry like a pissed off mom!

And just to add, where does everyone think these kids learn these aggressive behaviors and anger fits and behavioral problems from? They learn everything from their parents! So when their parent "paddles" them in anger, that child then thinks it is ok to hit when they are angry. They think it's ok to get that angry. My husband smacked my daughters hand one time. Would you believe she turned around a day later and smacked his hand because he wouldn't give her something she wanted. Where do you think she came up with that behavior? My husband hasn't done it since. Parents need to be more involved in raising their children and less h**l bent on discipline. What about positive re-enforcement?

Sorry...I'm getting off my soap box before I get my blood pressure up!

  4. What's the big deal?  Its legal where I live.  The parents voted FOR it
