Immigrants in California, including those without documents, are "far less likely" than the native-born to end up incarcerated for crimes, according to a study released Monday by the Public Policy Institute of California.

Analyzing prison records, researchers found that native-born men in California are incarcerated in state prisons at rates that are 2 1/2 times greater than the foreign-born.

Immigrants are 35 percent of California's adult population, the study notes, but only 17 percent of the state's prison population.

"Immigration is hot right now," Butcher said, with the media and political leaders paying close attention when an illegal immigrant is accused of crimes.

"Calls to curtail immigration, particularly illegal immigration, appeal to public fears about immigrants' involvement in criminal activities," the study says.

Yet those likely to be illegal immigrants also appear to be jailed at lower rates than the native-born, the study found.

How do you feel about this???

  1. It's probably because we're deporting the illegal ones.

  2. No because it's not true.

  3. I feel people are so blinded..

    Its funny; beccause i notice whenever you post facts, sources and VALID arguements.

    The only thing "people" come at you with is that, YOU must be lying, or the source isnt right. Instead of any REAL answer.

  4. Well, many people still hate immigrants, legal or illegal, no discrimination

  5. How do I feel about this?

    I feel that the media in not reporting facts as they should. Eventually, there's going to be a shifting in the tides so-to-speak and more reports are going to be highlighted about the crimes that are committed against illegal immigrants - instead of crimes they commit.

    You know, out of all the people that walk in here looking for an attorney, I see MAYBE a handful of Latinos. This basically leaves me sitting around twiddling my thumbs all day long as my job is to translate for them and the fact is there aren't any to translate for!

  6. Great, I support ALL LEGAL immigrants(my mother in-law included). However the FACT remains that ILLEGAL immigrants (there is a huge difference between legal and illegal) make up a disproportionately large (25%) percentage of prison populations in California alone and over 40% in Arizona.

  7. Ain't that a shame for our country and government.

  8. Interesting article.  One of the comments linked to this, not much about immigrants but found it rather interesting.

    U.S. incarceration rates by race, June 30, 2006:

        * Whites: 409 per 100,000

        * Latinos: 1,038 per 100,000

        * Blacks: 2,468 per 100,000

  9. Ok people, remember "native born" also includes all those anchor babies that grew up here and wound up in the pokey.  Nice try, greaseball.

  10. Whatever, lets deport illegals, that's all I care about. They are pros at commiting crime and not getting busted, that's all that tells me.

  11. Ah, maybe thats because there a lot less of them here than native born.  It is a simple statistical number.........I have a source too.  It says that illegals cause 21% of all us crime..  If there are only say 20 million of them vs 260 million legal citizens, you tell me how the percentages stack up! That's 7.82% of the population causing 21% of the crime.  WHats your point?

  12. If illegals were punished for being illegal then the prison rate for illegal immigrants would be higher. Statistics is can be manipulated to support any premise. The fact is; massive numbers of illegal immigrants are devastating our social resources. It is our responsibility to take care of our own countrymen before we extend our services to others. Illegals do not belong here, that is why they are illegal. Set up a mission in their own country and teach them there if you wish to elevate them. They do not belong here. The only people who want them are employers who want slave labor.

  13. What exactly do you mean by immigrants ? What were the settlers of Jamestown ? What were the folks who sailed over on the Mayflower ? Weren't these people "immigrants" ?

    What's so different about someone from Mexico coming to the U.S. seeking a better versus someone from Germany who comes here looking for the same ?

    In theory we are all immigrants given that our ancestors came from somewhere which usually means some European country ! We have people of Irish descent, English Descent, Scottish Descent, Polish Descent, German Descent, Italian Descent etc etc etc !

    If everyone in this country conducted an ancestry check, you would be surprised at the blood some of us have running through our veins !

  14. Id say this, first of i usually agree with pro immigration arguments but i am also a person of numbers and if there is one thing i know is that no statistic positive or negative towards illegal immigrants (note the key word here is illegal) can not be trusted,

    so just as people that scream "the toooook rrrr juuubs" and claim there are 35 million illegals and they are using billions of tax dollars etc....

    and your claim on the ratio between inmates and the CA population can not be trusted.

    why? because we just dont know the actual numbers its all just a guess.

    I hope you take my comments seriously and do understand that for the most part i agree with Pro immigration advocates
