just ignorant people have their minds shut to change.

  1. i agree AND disagree. it does have adverse effects for some people. and there are still chemicals that, when smoked, can be harmful. i have found research that has found THC, the active ingredient, to protect the lungs from the harm that the smoke can cause, this even includes cigarette smoke...so while it has the same compounds that cause cigarettes to irritate your lungs, it also has an added protective benefit from the THC.

it definitely has less harmful physical AND emotional AND social effects than alcohol, and thats legal, so that really isn't a good argument.

most research and studies done in america either include othe harder  drug use*i.e. cocaine* in the study or they don't have a control group that ONLY ingests marijuana.

i'm sure people who claim "my husband has suppressed sexual interest" don't consider that he could very well have that with or without he marijuana and unless he quit and suddenly had a surge of sexual desire, its unfair to consider marijuana the culprit.

just like the 30k a year guy...you could just as well be the type of person that finds it hard to find self-motivation or there may be other causes...

in other words, people who oppose marijuana use arguments that have little merit due to the fact that its hard to blame something when you don't know that the symptom would be the same without the drug.

marijuana has been PROVEN to help with many diseases; MS, AIDs, various cancers, psychological disorders, pain disorders, and the list goes on. the benefits would be less likely to have unwanted lung irritation if ingested some other way...but the benefit is undeniable. in a study done by UC Davis last year they found that people who started using medical marijuana either completely stopped, or drastically decreased the use and need for other MORE harmful pharmaceuticals.

so while stating that it has NO negative effects will rile people up, the benefits for some definitely outweight the negative effects brought on by the prescription drugs that are used to treat the same conditions.

i'm sure those acting like marijuana is some devil would support he use of RX drugs that have many, many debilitating effects...some of which include DEATH and anal leakage...

two things that marijuana never causes. and most of the negative effects listed by the answers to this question only apply WHILE the person is using the drug and usually only applies to people that are not used to using the drug and/or they just use to much and "abuse" it.

but if people want to assume they know something and insist on proof from marijuana supporters without understanding there is actually MORE proof supporting marijuana than the opposite...more power to them.

is ignorance really bliss? who knows...you tell me.

  2. Buddy, I'd like to know your sources. They are false.

While marijuanna (Cannibis sativa) doesn't have a lot of the nasty side effects that some drugs do, there are still some major cons to it.

It is still carcinogenic in the smoked form.

Huge cannabinoid receptor imbalance, in the brain and the rest of the body with long term use.

All those munchies can lead to obesity (as the drug rhimanobant is a Cannabinoid 1 receptor target to reduce overeating).

Slowness of learning/ memory function in the hippocampus (there are a lot of CB1 receptors there). Long term use lends to the "forgetting" of memories.

There are a lot of cannabinoid receptors in the frontal cortex - decreased motor function.

The most compelling reason why the drug really isn't so good for you: it has been proven to lower the immune response needed to fight infection. Bad for HIV and cancer. Its only benefit in that situation is for terminally ill patients for its psychotropic effects and to aid appetite. If you don't believe me, Google pubmed, type in THC (one of the main psychoactive ingredients), and pro-inflammatory response. You will find a lot of studies conducted in both people and animals that show that the drug significantly lowers the body's ability to fight off infection. So, you are more prone to be sick and stay sick when you use the drug.

Sorry to burst your "truth" bubble with the real truth.

    Edited for devonandcorey:

Marijuana has not been "proven" to help with most of what you are talking about. Your statement is based on assumptions and information taken out of context. Misinformation is not beneficial to anyone. Please get your facts straight, as I can quote studies too.

Marijuana contains two different classes of active compounds - cannabinoid 1 (CB1) and cannabinoid 2 (CB2). It is important when looking at possible theraputics to distinguish between marijuanna the plant, and selected cannabinoid compounds that may be beneficial. The difference is the fact that the lay person cannot, from the 80 or so cannabinoid compounds in marijuana, select which ones to take into the body. THC is a CB1 agonist, and so it contains the psychotropic elements and memory formation issues associated with marijuana. A lot of the compounds being researched for medical use are synthetic (man-made) cannabinoid compounds, and are not from the marijuana plant.

Also, your body naturally produces cannabinoid compounds. These are called endocannabinoids. The two most common are 2-AG and anadamide.

Some research has shown that in genetic autoimmune diseases (ALS, MS) the cannabinoid compounds in marijuana can prolong life in terms of that disease, and limit suffering. However, the use of marijuana would still leave an immunocompromised individual open for a potentially fatal infection. In diseases such as cancer, please refer to my above statement. Cannabinoid compounds are also being researched for neuropathic pain, such as what is found in bone cancer, HIV and sciatica. In this line of research CB2s are starting to become the front runners of research, as these compounds do not trigger the psychotropic effects that CB1s trigger.

FYI- There are CB1 receptors on the male vas deffrins, so the wife's claim about lack of sexual fulfillment from her husband that is a pothead is valid.

Cannabinoid compounds, individually, do hold theraputic promise in the health world. However, marijuana does have health risks and side effects associated with its use. Its cons do outweigh its pros in most health related cases (the exception being late stage terminal illnesses)- this is why it isn't legal!

  3. Dude, if marijuana has no negative effects, why is it illegal?  There are obviously EXPERTS (which do not include you) who believe that it does have negative effects serious enough to prohibit its use.

  4. Really???

  5. Sure. What you said. But when I was 19 and knew everything I said the same thing. Now I'm 55 and have a lovely retail job at 30k because I was too unmotivated to finish college.

And I quit smoking dope in about 1985!

But it is probably no MORE harmful than alcohol AND nicotine combined.

  6. the most obvious thing is the way it deflates your wallet.

however if setting your future on fire is what you need to do go hard.

    ...

    .

  7. try being married to a pothead if you think there are no negative impacts.  weight gain is not what most americans need.  the lethargy and sexual suppression is hard on a marriage.

  11. Other than the chemical breakdown that you are inhaling every time you light a joint, pipe, or bong.  You'd have to eat it for it to have no negative effects, but I imagine you already know that...

Do you belong to the local NORML chapter?

  12. yes i did.

    and to the first answerer....

Hallucinations: duh... thats what drugs are for

    Delusions: ditto

Impaired memory: impaired SHORT TERM MEMORY ONLY WHILE INTOXICATED

    Disorientation: again only while intoxicated...

Daily cough and phlegm production: only with chronic use and is expected when smoking ANYTHING (bong's are much less harsh and you can always cook it in something!)

More frequent acute chest illnesses: same as above (although studies show no increase in the risk of cancer or emphysema)

Increased risk of lung infections: same as above

    Obstructed airways: myth

Altered responses to visual stimuli: b.s.

    Increased tremulousness: b.s.

Problems with sustained attention and memory: only while intoxicated

Poor problem-solving skills: only while intoxicated

and LOL to anyone that thinks marijuana was made illegal by EXPERTS. the people who decided to make it illegal were given a presentation by someone who WANTED TO MAKE IT ILLEGAL and were given absolutely no sources for these "facts"

and... being politicians, they ate it up.
