  1. If your statistic is accurate,... I feel equally proud and ashamed to be a part of this American minority.

  2. The Creationists have made it such a big controversy about it that science teachers are now afraid to teach biology properly.

  3. My God, do you mean that 14% are really that stupid?

    That everything came from nothing?

think about it.  and as far as the EU nations,  who saved their ignorant butts in the last two wars?

  4. I don't know why Americans won't accept it, aside from right-wing conservatives pushing their views on Christians. It's so sad. People (in ALL groups) need to think for themselves. Just because someone says their way of thinking is the "Christian" way doesn't mean everyone else has to fall in line. People should study and figure things out on their own.

Great question. Ignore fmko... some people just get a little too defensive (i.e. insecure) in their beliefs.

  5. i think it has to do with people in trust positions acting as authority in the field of science when they are anything but.  i was listening to this religious show on the radio the other day, and this guy was talking about how evolution was a lie.  he went in to the usual arguments you read here, i.e. 2nd law of thermodynamics, why are there still monkeys?, etc.  the problem is you have people with a bad knowledge of science teaching people with little or no knowledge of science.  being that the people that are teaching about it are so trusted, those who know nothing about it, naturally take them at their word.  it makes their lies even more believable when they sound "scientific".  i mean if you were ignorant on most parts of science and you heard someone talking about the 2nd law of thermodynamics, you'd probably just nod your head in agreement, without even bothering to question it.  i imagine the thought process for most believers is, "this priest knows about thermodynamics!!! who am i to question him?  i barely passed h.s. biology with a c-."  to say it's a case of the blind leading the blind, is a misnomer.  it's more of an example of the senseless leading the blind.

  6. I doubt this is true.  That poll was probably taken in rural Alabama.

  7. About 10% still think the world is flat also.

  8. Europe is more advanced, in more ways than one. The south of the USA is comparable to the middle east as far as tolerance, diversity and open mindedness goes.

America is a dreadful country. No health care, evidently failing education system, baboon for a president...awful.

  9. shouldn't this be is science...or are you trying to push an anti-religious view...

add on...i judge whom ever i want...i have freedom...unless you want thought police control me...like many atheists seem to want...

  10. I thought it was 40% of Americans who believed that humans descended from an earlier species..

Which is essentially what evolution is. People like to equate evolution with the big bang and abiogenesis theories, which are completely seperate.

  11. SH*T

    we're in mad deep yo.

    hahahahaha

    im hyper

    uh well..

    I DONT EAT TURKEY

    because im vegetarian.

    yum yum.

    so h**l with turkey..

but yea.. america is a sucky place.. dont come here gonzo.

Americans are stuck up and christian.. of course.. aha

  12. Actually, the vast majority of Americans believe in evolution.

Unfortunately, the actions of a few manipulative people have convinced many Americans that evolution means something other than what it does mean.

I'd like to see the source for your stats. Most say 33-49%. http://www.religioustolerance.org/ev_pub...

  13. Those countries have seen the negative side of religion and dealt with it for longer.  They also got all their fundies to flee to the US.  So here we are trying to catch up.

  14. finally someone stated that americans are smarter than europe!  thank you!

  15. Could you provide a source? I don't want to believe it's true, it's just too depressing.

  16. Inasmuch as every American stands as total evidence for evolution by their very bodies, DNA, cellular make-up, genetic variation, vestigial tail, etc., the denial that Evolution is true is rather hilarious.

Chalk it up to very poor education at the elementary levels.

Most educated Americans do believe in Evolution, but sure, if you take a survey of every person regardless of their education, you are going to get all kinds of absurd results.

I think about 25% of all Americans talk to the dead and believe in angels as well, and even more think the moon landings were "faked".

  17. I'm too depressed to answer...

  18. This statistic leads me to believe that there is more than a religious basis for their disbelief, since a large percentage of people who identify themselves as Christian believe in evolution.  So I can only chalk it up to the poor state of education in the US.  We are falling far behind in all the sciences, and biology is only one of them.

  19. (sigh).....these are the same people that don't believe in history, either....

  20. As somebody who belielves in God, I find that statistic rather depressing...if, in fact, it's true.  Some of us who are believers do not have any problem accepting science, logic, rational thought, etc.  By me, God could have created the Big Bang, the evolutionary process, life on other planets, the physical laws of the universe, etc.  I think those people who insist that everything was created 6,000 years ago and that evolution didn't happen are an embarassment.  Having spiritual beliefs and accepting science does not have to be an "either/or" situation.

  21. Many Americans prefer quick and easy solutions. Fairies provide that. Evolution requires reading, thinking, and understanding, none of which can be achieved as fast as simply claiming that some fairy did it.
