Question:

Did you know that the deadline to sign draft picks is this Friday? Has your team signed their top pick?

I only noticed because I was looking to find where Pedro Alvarez ended up in the Pirates system. But his agent is Scott Boras and he wants a $7 million signing bonus and major league contract for Alvarez. So if he isn't signed by tomorrow, he re-enters the 2009 draft and the Pirates get a compensatory pick.

Can't these front offices just get these kids signed? How good would the Rays be if they played lowball with all those first rounders who have them in first place now?

Has your team signed their guy yet?

  1. yes

  2. Actually this is not true for college seniors [they don't have the choice to go back to school so there's no deadline for them, at least for now.]

The Mariners drafted a reliever with their first pick, I wasn't too excited about that.  He's hasn't signed and is also a Scott Boras client.

  3. No, the Royals haven't signed their top pick yet.  He's represented by Boras (just like the Royals last 2 #1 picks) and both of those guys got signed literally minutes before the deadline, so I expect the same to happen this year.

  4. Yep! I got 8th pick Gordon Beckham's autograph at the White Sox Game yesterday XD!

    Go Chicago White Sox!

  5. My team has finally signed Gordon Beckham on Wednesday. I would be really mad if they didn't sign Beckham. He's probably our next starting shortstop, and will solve the question mark at that position.

  6. The Orioles still have not signed their #1 pick LHP Brian Matusz. I hope they do soon, we need pitching.

  7. Yep.  The Brewers signed Brett Lawrie a while ago.

I'm looking forward to seeing him play in one of the next few seasons.  He's the next Russell Martin.
