China has tried to make the Olympics a stage to present a picture-perfect image to the outside world, and perfection was clearly the goal for the opening ceremony. Lin Miaoke, a third-grader, was judged cute and appealing but "not suitable" as a singer. Another girl, Yang Peiyi, 7, was judged the best singer but not as pretty. So at the last minuite, under pressure from the highest levels of the ruling Communist Party to find the perfect face and voice, the ceremony's musical director decided on a compromise. When Miaoke opened her mouth to sing, the voice that was actually heard was a recording of Peiyi.

What do you think of this?

  2. I heard this on the Nightly News tonight... Interesting, & kinda sad... But You know, this is "China's party"- and they can Lie, if they want to... But the World knows the Truth.

  3. I don't believe it the Chinese could not do anything like this.

  4. The idea is to enhance a spirit of team work to achieve some best result.

The open ceremony is more on cultural perfection.

The problems are really in the game: NO DRUG!!

The ensure the clean game is the most important issue.

  5. Yes - she was prettier than the real singer!

  6. Seems very unimportant.

  7. Well, I think in the western world someone who sang beautifully, but looked like the back of 4x4 would'nt go down well on TV either.

  8. I think it's fine.  This is part of the Chinese culture and we have to respect that.  Even though it's wrong it is okay, because this is done in Asia a lot, it just that this happened to occur during the beggining ceremony of the olympics. And the Olympics is a very big thing to the world.

  9. Yes, the chinese didn't think that the girl that sings the song was pretty enough to be on TV.  That is just mess up!!

  10. Yes I know it.The chinese government has once agained shamed China by saying that the reason for her not singing in fornt of people is that she is not pretty. It has shown to world that if you are not pretty,Chinese will not respect you.A bad precedent set by government in Olympics where the whole world is watching.

  11. Earth-shaking.

  12. oh my oh my goodness, wonder where they learn it from???

  13. Really, it does not surprise me one bit. This is the kind of things communisms and other socialists type governments  do all the time. Appearance is more important than reality.

I was watching the opening ceremonies on MS-NBC and the commentators mentioned on how surprisingly disciplined the performers were. I just thought to myself, "It's not that hard to get that stuff perfect when your buddy got shot yesterday for messing up just a little. The threat of execution will do wonders for you choreography."
