86 million barrels of oil per year.  Way beyond anything sustainable.  People forget that this is a non-renewable resource;  once its burned up its gone.  From some of the comments offered so far its clear that a lot of people treat this situation very lightly.  It's something that really needs to be regarded seriously.  Please see:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peak_oil  and other web resources for further information.  If you are ignorant on this subject you will not be able to contribute to any solutions, but continue to be part of the problem.

This nonsense about peak oil has reared its ugly head ever since the 1880s when predictions of the end of oil were common.  It has been ever since.  The worst president in US history, Jimmy Carter, predicted the end of oil in 20 years and that was 30 plus years ago.  It never ceases to amaze me that some people always assume the worst and then think they somehow have special knowledge and are more informed than the rest of us.
