Question:

Did you know there are 75 breeds on banned breed lists?

No? I didn't either - and I can't find any proof that there are. This list makes the rounds every so often. Yes, there are some breeds on there that are subject to BSL, either at the state/provincial or municipal level. And I do not make light of that.

BUT - I do not support the spreading of propaganda, even if that propaganda supports a cause I believe in.

I e-mailed the manages of the site months ago - no answer. And any other web site I can find only references back to this one.

So - my question is - do you believe this list? Can anyone find a link to an OFFICIAL site (ex. a City's web page) that supports the supposed ban on Boston Terriers? Pugs? French Bulldog?

  1. no but i do now

  2. No, that list seems ridiculous. Golden Retriever, Labrador, Boston Terrier? That's crazy.

Alot of those breeds on there are subjected to BSL, like any form of pitbull, huskies, akitas, chows, mastiffs, dobermans, rottweilers, etc. And it's only because stupid people raise these dogs to be mean and then ruin it for all of us responsible pet owners. But as for the others, I've never heard that before.

This kid at work was trying to tell me I should raise my lab to be a "vicious watch dog" because a "watch dog who won't bite someone is useless"... I almost flipped out. I just said "I don't want my dog to bite someone because I don't want to have to put her to sleep. I think people who raise their dogs like this should be taken out back and shot in the head and let the dogs go to someone who knows how to take care of them." He had nothing to say after that.

EDIT: Not saying any comments were directed at me but the only reason I didn't seem shocked that pitbulls were on that list was not because I think they DESERVE to be on any list... I think they are sweet, wonderful dogs and they have a horrible reputation. I was simply saying I know they are commonly banned and most homeowners insurance companies won't even cover you if you own one, but that's the only reason I didn't say "What?! Pit bulls are on there??!" because it's not news that they're increasingly banned, as sad as it is.

  3. Oh, come on! Some of the dogs on that list I haven't even heard of! How many people can say they've been terrorized by a Kangal Dog?!

That list has GOT to be inflated to some degree because it makes no sense at all!

Edit: Judgerz, I've never even heard of a Kangal dog! I just looked it up though and realized it's also known as an Anatolian Shepherd which I have heard of, but it also said that a Kangal dog should be gentle and good with small children! WTF??

Seriously, I think this whole list is just nonsense. ANY dog can be frightening......including a tiny dog!

ANY BSL list is utter c**p!

  4. I don't believe that list. They have borzoi and a scottish deerhound yet no other sighthounds? Borzoi are one of the sweetest breeds. I hate BLS and think they are stupid to begin with since any dog could be dangerous when owned by the wrong person. And an aussie, boston, pug, labs?!?!

Husky's are actually on the top 10 list for most dangerous dogs. Being number 4. I know when I lived in my old apartment they were on the banned list.

    http://www.petsdo.com/blog/top-ten-10-mo...

"From 1979 to 1998, pit-bull-type dogs and rottweilers accounted for more than half of the 238 fatal attacks on humans.24 And along with huskies and Malamutes, and breeds developed for guarding and police work, including German shepherds, mastiffs, akitas, chow chows, and Dobermans, they consistently show up on the list of most-likely-to-bite breeds"

Any dog can be dangerous. h**l if you tick my little 14 lb italian greyhound off enough, he'll start biting you like crazy and growling like a mad man and will actually break the skin. My best friends pit Kane has never once growled or tried to bit anyone, even when prevoked. It all depends on the owner and how much the dog can tolerate.

One of the great things about my state though is we have a really good clause on vicious dogs.

"Ultimately, the judge's decision must be based on the statute or ordinance, which will define the term "dangerous dog." These definitions range from vague to extremely detailed. [State] officials, for example, have a detailed definition to help them make their decisions. According to the state statute, a vicious dog is one that:

~threatens someone, unprovoked, in a public place

~has a known tendency to attack unprovoked or otherwise ~endanger people or other domestic animals

~bites, injures, or attacks a person or domestic animal without provocation, on public or private property

~is trained or kept for dog-fighting, or isn't licensed.

The [state] law states that a dog cannot, however, be declared vicious if it injured someone who was deliberately trespassing on the dog owner's property, teasing or abusing the dog, assaulting another person, or committing a crime."

  5. I've never put much stock in this list, either, because I want to know what an "American Husky" is supposed to be, and how many "Kotzebue Huskies" or Greenland Huskies the creators have come across.

While I have no illusions that some poorly-bred, unsocialized c**p Siberian somewhere has probably bitten someone (and was, hopefully, euthanized before it was ever bred), there is absolutely no reason why Siberians should be on that list -- it is certainly NOT "Understandable" (Yorkshire, please do give me your reasoning).

The same goes for most breeds on that list.

As for restrictions on ownership -- I've never seen evidence anywhere in the USA that Siberians -- or Pugs! -- are restricted.

I really do wish people would stop citing it as a reliable source.

  6. My precious AmStaff is banned!!!!!!!!  Nooooo!!!!

I only found out recently that my Jasmine is banned from Mayfield, a city near me, and if she does live there, she has to constantly be on a leash (which I can understand leash laws, but this city has none), and a muzzle.  And we would have to pay $100,000 insurance on her!!  Eventually, every breed is going to get banned.  And just b/c you ban it, doesn't mean someone can't sneak a breed in!!  Our government...

In any case, I think that list is utter BS.

  7. Yorkshire Terrier-

Are you another person who is swayed to think these breeds are dangerous because of the media reports. Did you know 20 breeds of dogs are mistaken for pitbulls. It is even hard for people who have owned the breed their entire lives to distinguish pitbulls from another mistaken breed.

Also, I have seen dozens and dozens of vicious Chihuahuas and yet only one vicious pitbull. This pitbull was also about 20 pounds underweight and abused. I would be pissed off at the next human I came in contact with too. But the Chihuahuas I have seen were all loved, well kept and treated good.

    So seriously, rethink your *Understandable*.

    -----

Also, composing an entire list of BSL affected dogs would be hard. Each state and county within the state is different. You would need the breeds from each state and county then compile a list. BSL should not exist. Harsher animal cruelty punishment and background checks for owners should.

    Kristin B:

My pitbull and I are right there with you! It's upsetting to see people freak out over labs being on there but no one cares that APBTs are on that list. Ridiculous. Absolutely ridiculous.

  8. Yorkshire--

Why, on your list, do you say American Husky and Alaska Malamute are "why" but a Siberian Husky is "understandable", and your Dogue de Bordeaux is "Why" but other molloser or mastiff type dogs are labeled as "understandable"

Your list, as far as understandables and whys, make no sense.

That list, for that matter makes no sense.

See, to me, APBT shouldn't be on there (at least the ones I own) but Chesapeake Bay Retrievers and Chihuahuas should.

It's all relative to each persons personal experiences.

EDIT:  I notice a lot of people balking at Pugs, Labs, etc, but none balking at APBTs, Cane Corso, and other "pitbull" breeds.  Which points out the whole reason BSL is so effective, people believe that certain breeds are vicious, and SHOULD be on this list, but when it comes to the precious "family" dogs, HEAVEN FORBID they be on a dangerous dog list.

  9. I've seen that list before as well. I personally don't think it's accurate. Pug? Borzoi? Fox Terrier? I doubt those are banned breeds anywhere, to my knowledge, they aren't.

    .

  10. Oh god, what moron came up with this list? Golden retrievers, pugs, and etc? Whats next a chihuahua!? I mean what do they base on to make this list... the media?

  11. Thats gotta be a BS list- who would ban a mastiff?- It's a hoax:)

  12. Australian Shepherd?  My baby is "banned"?  Who created this list?  Is that what we're trying to figure out?

  13. I have seen this list before. There are many cities in many countries. You never know. But I don't know where you could find an official list.

Shanna- You have no idea. My best friend has a Kangal dog tied up in her yard. That thing is scary.

  14. Ok so what we are going to live in a country where we cant have guns cause they will (should be NOT) banned. and now also our dogs.

Sorry before I give up my GUNS, RELIGION (cause that will be next) and My DOBERMANs they will have to shoot me... oh that would be a gun... LOL

How about pry them from my COLD DEAD HANDS!

The BSL is BS in my opinion. I live in my little hick town, and cling to my guns, dogs and religion!

That means I will keep my dobermans and fight the bsl as much as I can.

There is no reason for the BSL. Not all dogs will attack no matter what breed they are.

I use to be scared of the Chi, until a friend showed me that not all of them are mean. I am glad she did.

Ignorance is what the BSL is.

NOT ALL DOGS ARE MEAN that are on that LIST!

  15. Nope! I remember when this was posted a while back, and people said then that they couldn't find any mention of most of these breeds being subject to BSL.

Another case of people believing everything they read, I suppose!

  16. I've heard of but there is no way all of it is real. What harm is a pug going to do. I've also seen on other lists the Dalmatian..though it is often spelled incorrectly as "Dalmation" Even the Saint Bernard is on the list! It was probably put on because of its size. I can understand breeds like the Tosa Inu and the Dogo Argentino are up there. But having the Labrador, French Bulldog...banned is just plain stupid. I have no idea where the info for that came from, but i can tell you that a lot of it was made up

  18. LMAO... beware the vicious pug!

HAHA, seriously, nothing about that website says "reputable" to me. I too, would like to see an official city page that states certain breeds are restricted. I know that Pits are restricted in some counties, but i have a hard time believing some of these other ones.

    ---

I am "balking" about a Pug being on the list because I have seen no proof or heard any reports of pugs being targeted by BSL legislation. Its well known FACT that APBT's and other bully breeds are indeed the focus of BSL, so there is nothing shocking about seeing them on this list. Regardless of whether or not you agree with any form of BSL, the fact remains that certain breeds are targetted by it, and others have never so much has been mentioned which is why its odd to see them listed. It has nothing to do with whether or not i think BSL against any dog is acceptable. ( I don't)

I hope that clears up my intentions.

  19. I don't believe it. IT's not official and tons of people have different breeds listed there. Like the pug or pitbull and terrier. They are common household dogs.

  20. Of course bostons, pugs, and frenchies are on the list! I mean come on look at those faces, short punched in noses, clearly of bulldog decent we have to ban them! (sarcasm)

    What a rediculous list.
