Person who sent me the e-mail checked it out, and received a letter from Sears confirming it.

If you work at Sears and get called up for service, Sears pays the difference between your service pay and your salary. They keep your job open with all your benefits, insurance, etc. for up to two years. So while there you lose no money and your health insurance stays intact.

I shop at Sears and am glad I do.

  1. Very, very cool.  Wish more places did this.  Good going Sears!!

  2. Hi,

I truly hate to burst your bubble - but - don't believe all you hear and sometimes read..

My mother, who worked at Sears [Which is now own by KMart or WalMart] back some years ago. Who had to fight for her retirement - aft working 24 too 25 years. The same Sears that started hiring "part time help" because they were not required to pay health insurance, retirement or other benefits that they would have normally paid out for "full time employees". The same Sears that informed there full time employees that they would have to either take a huge cut in pay & benefits or loose part of there retirement left Sears early, withdrew there retirement [to which they had to pay a penalty].

I don’t shop at Sears or the others mention above because of the above.

Sears a long time ago – there services, products had high quality made into them. Just there name, for most people back then – the name stood for High Quality.

    A note here:

If it wasn't for all those "Full Time Employees years ago, that worked to make Sears a name". They would have went out of business before they ever got started.....

If you believe the above? I ask you to just ask some of the older – past employees of Sears and discover this and form your own opinion.

Please don’t get offended at some of my rage. My past history is not too wonderful. Both of my parents divorced when I was 18mos. Mother worked 50 plus miles away at Sears and well I did not see her a much as I would have liked too. I don’t particularly like SEARS... Now that I know as to what she had to go through....

Copied/Paste from link given as to why all businesses are held to this law.

The Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act (USERRA), prohibits discrimination against persons because of their service in the Armed Forces Reserve, the National Guard, or other uniformed services. USERRA prohibits an employer from denying any benefit of employment on the basis of an individual’s membership, application for membership, performance of service, application for service, or obligation for service in the uniformed services. USERRA also protects the right of veterans, reservists, National Guard members, and certain other members of the uniformed services to reclaim their civilian employment after being absent due to military service or training.

    : )

  3. This isn't their company policy.  It's federal law.  It's called the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act.

EDIT: USERRA applies to ALL employers in the United States.  Look it up.  Employers are also required to give training, promotions, and pay raises commensurate with the length of time that the service member was called to service.  Service members should be briefed on this before leaving active duty status (I was).  If you know of an employer that is not doing this for a service member, have him/her contact the Department of Labor!  I added a link to the Wikipedia article on USERRA.

  4. Yes, this is excellent.  Other companies need to step up to the plate and do the same thing.

  5. Did you know that Sears promised to provide health insurance to its retirees and reneged on that promise? My elderly parents were left with no insurance after 25 years of service.

  6. I will start shopping at Sears a lot more now.  Thanks for the great info!!
