Melbourne University will this Saturday confer the first Australian doctorate of philosophy in ufology, the study of unidentified flying objects, upon Martin Plowman, a culture and communication student.

Would this be more about exploring what people thought about UFOs rather than identifying them?

  1. Jonquill..I've been wanting to go to Melbourne to visit a friend!! This would be the perfect time. Then I could go to those classes too. Wanna move in with all of us? Maybe I'll go by UFO .lol  I think these classes are a really good idea. SOMEBODY needs to study the UFOs and find out what's REALLY happening.But..who will believe the truth??

  2. I like it! You can be an expert on something unproven. On the serious side though, UFOs say a lot about society and culture and that's where the 'philosophy' will come from. In the States, it's all about greys, abductions and conspiracies. In the UK they're seen as just lights or experimental planes. Australia has the weird lights and Russia has visitations! Scandinavia features UFO rides. 50s sightings described 50s style UFOs and photos show chrome saucers and men in c**p looking suits. Now it's all hi-tech and reflective of current technology. Jeez, I'm going on here...over and out....: )

  3. It seems these days you can get a degree in anything and I just thought of a good one.

I am going to do five years of research into KOPRIA or should that be KOPRIAOLOGY.

It is fascinating subject and biologists can tell a lot from it. I expect to have an interesting journey as I travel the world's cultures investigating their kopria. I better be careful though as it could be a sensitive issue with some cultures so I must be sure to be politically correct at all times.

Just in case you want to know what kopria is check out the following:

  4. What? You can actually get a degree in studying weather balloons? What has the world come to?

    *edit*: Jonquill

Ufologist = idiot trying to debunk UFO sightings, even though we already know that they aren't alien spacecraft visiting us, thus wasting their time.

  5. I had to skim the article - it's a doctorate.  You can get a doctorate in the study of anything.  It's not like it's a normal degree program people will be taking courses in - probably mostly a research degree.  If I studied the history of people who preformed exorcisms, then I could probably get a PhD in exocism-ology, but that doesn't mean I think they work.

But I'm going to stick with physics, either way.

  6. Since any claim of extraterrestrial origin is rejected outright, UFOlogy is the study of unidentified objects in the air.

Perhaps he's never actually seen something he can't identify?

  7. It's interesting...I suppose it has to do with the fact a lot of cults and religions in the past have had unexplained accounts of aerial phenomenon...still, a degree simply in ufology is a bit odd...

  8. I just thought it was an interesting read.
