Question:

Did you see Comedy Central's Roast of Bob Saget... Norm McDonald?

I missed the last 30 minutes and most of it was hilarious....

But then Norm McDonald got up to do his thing and it was AWFUL!!! He read all his jokes from cue cards as he was saying them. All the jokes were beyond hackneyed. When he said he was done I think the crowd was cheering because he was done.

Whoever he bought those jokes from, he really needs to get his money back.

I really used to like Norm and have thought everything I've seen him in was great, until this.

Does anyone agree?

  1. Hackneyed!  Well, that's a pretty big vocabulary word for someone so totally clueless.  Just admit you didn't get it and we'll forgive you.

And then there's the moron here who ripped Norm for making jokes that come straight from a cheesy 4th grade joke book, but himself goes by the cheesy handle "Justin Credible"!

And the guy who said he looks "visibly different" from when he was on SNL and that it "upset" him because he speculated that it might involve "drinking or drugs".  How about the fact that it's been over ten years and he's aging?  The only upsetting thing is that it will happen to you, too.

OF COURSE the jokes were bad.  That was the whole point!

Oldschoolicon_61's answer is spot on.  That's your best answer right there.

  2. Both my friend and I absolutely DIED laughing during Norm McDonald.  He was by far the funniest man of the night, with the best, most original roast I have ever seen.  Both of us had the exact same reaction timeline:  First shocked and afraid that Norm was bombing.  Next we were confused. Then we were on the floor laughing.  Simply amazing.

  3. Honestly? You guys don't get it? Really? I'm guessing you didn't care for the comedian in "Wet Hot American Summer" either, huh? The set was good. Not great, but good. "This man is for the birds" was great.

Honestly, Norm has been doing comedy for a few years. I'm pretty sure he didn't think he was coming up with cutting edge material, here. What, you'd rather have another Carlos Mencia set where he makes fun of retarded people? Don't worry I think "Disaster Movie" opens in a few days. That should be more your speed.

  4. That was the entire point, of course.  Why would you even watch a roast without your sarcasm meter on full alert?  It was obvious what he was doing after the first joke, and it made him the best of the night, in my opinion.

  5. http://halife.com/speakers/roast.html

He was just using old roast jokes from back in the day.

  6. That was intentional. It's called dry humor. Seriously, if you didn't get that, I don't know how to help you.

  7. Norm was without a doubt the funniest comedian of the night. Anyone who thinks he was actually attempting to make good jokes, i'm surprised u can even use the internet. Its obvious he was telling horrible jokes, ruining the roast, for amusement. Also he's gotten in trouble numerous times for telling jokes that were too "offensive", and this was a way of ridiculing the situation and telling the cleanest jokes ever made.

  8. Yup I watched it

  9. yea that was done on purpose. in fact watching the audience and guests totally miss the point combined with what he was saying was the funniest part of the whole show. the only time i was laughing out loud was during his part.

  10. He was absolutely horrendous! His jokes sounded like he got them from one of those cheesy joke books that you check out from your elementary school library in 4th grade!!

I never liked the guy at all and didn't get why anyone ever did like him. The last thing I remember seeing him in was Billy Madison playing an dumb loser, hmm, bet that was a stretch for him to play, LOL.

  11. Norm did what is called, an anti-comedy set and he used nothing but clean olden time insult jokes. The delivery was so essential to the effect and I thought Norm did a terrific job. Took some balls, though.

  12. I think Norm did the cheezy, squeaky clean jokes in part to mock the type of humor that Bob Saget used in his career on both Full House and Americas Funniest Videos. That and just to make people say WTF. I thought it was a well thought out and unique approach, as opposed to just being as nasty as you can.

  13. I'm waiting for the 1:00am showing. Hopefully it will be uncensored.

  14. yes i agree...lol

  15. I think Norm McDonald gave up trying years ago. Why should tonight be any different?

  16. I think it might have went over your head. The whole point of the really "PG" Jokes was to seem really corny. A lot of people seem to think that he stole the show. I think his level of comedy is so great it just passes over so many people. Watch it again, you might understand what he was going for a second time around.

  17. I agree it was probably an attempt at sarcasm/inside joke, but didn't it seem like there was something seriously off about the man? The other "comedians" alluded to it repeatedly. I recall "the barely conscious Norm McDonald" among others. Almost seemed like he had suffered some sort of brain damage or something. Lots of heavy drinking or drugs? I was upset to see him so visibly different than in his SNL days.
