He said, "I don't know anyone who benefits when a mother is separated from her infant child". What do you make of this?

  1. He said that in the context of immigration.  I think he was referring to adults who are not legal citizens being deported and separated from their children who were born in the US. This has been happening a lot in California.  We have had some heartbreaking situations where one parent is sent back to their country of origin leaving the rest of the family behind.  I think he was just saying there needs to be common sense injected in these situations.  I don't think he was referring to adoption.   Here's the quote from his speech

"Passions fly on immigration, but I don't know anyone who benefits when a mother is separated from her infant child"

  2. That he lied about having a high IQ.

In the case of adoption, most kids are lucky to find families

that can support them and raise them. They benefit, and nothing

but good karma is giving to the adopter.

  3. I think that's true.

It's sometimes unfortunately necessary when a mother truly can't parent, but I wouldn't call it a "benefit," even if it's the sad reality of the situation. It's always a loss, even if it's an unpreventable one.

I am in favour of efforts to enable mothers and fathers to parent. If a parent is able to get their life together when they're struggling, everyone does benefit from that.

There's never going to be a perfect world where everyone can parent, but I think improving the odds is something to work for. When parents can't take care of their children, it's a sad circumstance, not a benefit to anyone.

  4. Actually, I'm almost positive that he was referring to an incident where ICE agents allegedly ripped an infant from it's illegal alien mother's arms.  The story has been discredited countless times.

  5. I think, like most politicians, he speaks to the crowd in front of him. For instance, he also said this about adoption...

"Our goal should be to make abortion less common, that we should be discouraging unwanted pregnancies, that we should encourage adoption wherever possible," Obama told the magazine.

  6. i screamed out loud when he made that comment.  even though he was speaking about undocumented people, i think he would not be so quick to rip apart a family just because mom isn't married, living in the burbs and driving a tricked-out SUV...

  7. I agree...there were also lots of familiar quotes in the beginning for his introduction that were at home for me and foster youth and adoptees facing discrimination.

    I kept nodding...

    I'm totally voting for him.

    GO OBAMA!

  8. Well I didnt hear his speech so I don't know what context it was in. Was he talking about mothers who have to give up their babies? It makes me cry when I watch the adoption stories on TV, I know the receiving parents are happy to have the baby, but I have a daughter and I cannot imagine the pain of giving up a child because you couldn't afford to keep them. If you don't want them it's a different story

  9. Obviously he is saying that if you were separated from your natal mother than he hates you and wants you to fail

  10. I loved what I heard of it. I believe what he said about bush!
