I was wondering about how many people the Chinese gov't had placed under house arrest and thrown in jail in the days and weeks prior to today's event. Preventative "housekeeping", of sorts. How do you feel about all this?

  2. yes i watched it!

    how great it was!

  3. I was wondering how many people always focus on the negative of every and any situation. And how many people will be thinking thoughs like yours during such an impressive, intricate and beautiful spectacle.

  4. the opening ceremony was boring...i turned the TV off after 5 minutes

  6. unfortunately missed it, was marking essays from my illiterate plagarising students - wish the chinese had put them under house arrest.

  7. Turned it off after 1st hour to see Monk on USA.

Was thinking: What an incredible WASTE of $300 Million Dollars. Absolutely disgraceful to spend that kind of money on this type of thing, and to produce something so utterly boring is pathetic. Spend the money on bettering the lives of the Chinese people.

  8. Too many Mexican waves...

    not enough Fireworks...

If there are no human rights, how can there be abuse?

  9. I only watched some of the Parade of Nations. A few comments:

Many Islamic nations had few, if any, female athletes on the national teams (I don't think Saudi Arabia had any).

It was encouraging to hear the applauds for Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) and Japan, since they have historically been rivals against China.

There were some nations competing that, in all honesty, I had never heard of and could never locate on a globe.

I thought about how alone you must feel if you were your country's sole representative (or among only a few). For example, some nations sent only a few athletes, and you are your nation's only chance. But the United States sends hundreds of athletes, so there are hundreds of opportunities to win a medal (not nearly as much potential pressure on each individual).

I wish my TV remote came with a "Mute Bob Costas" button.

  10. I saw the drumming, which was spectacular. But it's sad that the Chinese government gets such a distraction from their abuses.

  11. I can't say I thought quite the same thing you did, but I did think of how many people China's screwed over since the Communists took over a lot.

I did enjoy that thing with the drums early on (the countdown) and the way they lit the torch though.  What was up with those hideous outfits the US was wearing?  But the story about the kid in the earthquake who walked with Yao Ming was a great story.

I'm sure we'll hear a lot more about what China's done to its own people over the course of the Olympics.

  12. I was wondering if Russia spent an appropriate amount of money on training their pilots or if some mig will be going astray as far as italy.

  13. It was good, but was it worth evicting people for and flattening their homes?
