After intense speculation regarding his future in the past couple of days, the Olympique de Marseille coach has admitted that he cannot manage the club under current circumstances
For a long time, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Olympique-de-Marseille-c40127 coach, Didier Deschamps, has been linked with a move away from the club. There are a lot of reasons that can attribute towards speculations surrounding the Frenchman’s situation.
Firstly, Deschamps has enjoyed quite a frosty relation with sporting director Jose Anigo. The duo never seems to see eye to eye and last year, publicly criticised eachother. Though president Vincent Labrune tried to intervene and pacify the situation, the
damage has been done and things are not going to return to what they used to be between DD and Anigo.
Secondly, Les Phoceens are currently mired in serious financial issues. The club is no more a force in the transfer market and next year, it is accepted that Marseille could record a deficit of 35 million euros if they do not take care of their wage bill.
In order to avoid this situation, the club has implemented an austerity plan similar to that of Olympique Lyonnais’. Marseille will see quite a few star players this summer in order to reduce burden on the wage bill and will rely more or less on academy
players. Even if they do delve in the transfer market, Marseille will target free agents or Ligue 2 youngsters.
And, Didier Deschamps does not really want to be part of this anymore as he feels that he cannot work under such financial constraints.
While talking to the media, Deschamps revealed that OM knew about his position and he did not want to say anything publicly as he respected the club too much.
“Know that the direction of OM knows my position from May 25 to leave. I am someone who will always behave well and be respectful to the club. I know what it (Marseille) means to me. I took this decision because it was impossible to work under these conditions;
it would have been detrimental to the club and players.”
Now that DD wants to pack up and leave, Marseille are likely to start short listing potential successors including Stade Rennais coach Frederic Antonetti.
