Didier Deschamps aims to copy
Manchester City blueprint for Chelsea clash
Marseille boss Didier Deschamps has told
The Sun that his team will attempt to copy Manchester City’s winning formula when they play Chelsea at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday evening.
The former Monaco boss stated, “City did a lot of good things against Chelsea [on] the weekend, and though I don't have the same players at my disposal, there are many things we can try
to copy.”
Deschamps went further to say he will look to hurt the Blues on the counter-attack, just like City, who managed to carve out the winning goal on the break. It was Carlos Tevez who netted
the vital goal, and although Marseille doesn’t necessarily have anyone of the Argentine’s quality, Deschamps wants his team doing the basics right and sticking to his game-plan. “Like City, we will look to close the space, impose ourselves physically and hit
them on the counter-attack.”
The Frenchman knows his side faces a difficult challenge in order to come away with anything from west London, but is confident that they will cause problems for Chelsea. “Chelsea are
the favorites to win and, on paper, they are a better side than Marseille. But we are not coming here just to admire their play, and cannot settle for staying back. We must look to play our game and create problems.” Deschamps explained.
It’s certainly a tough task for the French champions, and following their defeat to Spartak Moscow in their opening group game, they will need to pick up points where they wouldn’t have
expected to in order to claw their way back into the group. If they lose on Tuesday, and Spartak overcomes group minnows MSK Zilina as expected, they’ll be six points from qualification from the group with just four games remaining, making qualification an
uphill battle.
