The day after the draw for the Champions League, Olympique de Marseille coach Didier Deschamps conducted a press conference on the quarterfinal against German Bundesliga side Bayern Munich.
The OM coach took the opportunity to speak about the big stars at the Bavarian club.
“There’s Lahm, Boateng, Scheissneger (instead of Schweinsteiger) if I failed to pronounce his name correctly, I forget about a ‘W’ in the name,” said Deschamps.
However, what Deschamps did not know was that Scheissneger means shut the **** up in German. A pronunciation mistake that was unintentional has now cost DD a lot including the mockery of the German press.
Deschamps unfortunately pronounced the German international’s name wrong and what the Frenchman did not know was the fact that he had changed the literal meaning.
The mispronunciation of Didier Deschamps has created a major buzz in http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Germany-c2904 and the media has not hesitated in making fun of the former World Cup winner. At a recent press conference, Deschamps faced a lot of questions from journalists about it.
However, despite the obvious embarrassment, Didier Deschamps saw humour in the whole affair and insisted that he did not want to hurt Schweinsteiger and it was an honest mistake.
“I’m on top, number 1, 200,000 connections, it’s funny. What makes me laugh less is when I translated those words literally. But I’m working on it now and will pronounce it right from now on. It’s a bit hard to pronounce. I speak other languages, but German
is difficult.”
Deschamps does not know much about the German language but one has to give it to the German media who did not blow things out of proportions. Instead, the Germans took that as a joke and rather than sulking at Deschamps’ mistake, chose to joke about it which
is a rarity these days.
Bastian Schweinsteiger on the other hand, will be looking forward to hear Deschamps pronounce his name correctly when Bayern Munich play Marseille at the Velodrome tonight.
“I want to apologise to him and Bayern Munich. It was not intentional,” said Deschamps in last night’s press conference.
The recent episode is certainly a good lesson in German for Deschamps who would now seriously be considering studying the language in the summer.
