Olympique de Marseille finally bowed out of the Champions League following a 4-0 aggregate defeat at the hands of Bayern Munich. Marseille lost the first game at home 2-0 and were defeated at the Allianz Arena by the same margin.
However, despite the defeat, Olympique de Marseille coach, Didier Deschamps, is being realistic about the outcome. The former Juventus manager acknowledges the fact that his side lost to a technically superior side and that there’s no shame in that.
“It might have been different but it is not. There are no regrets. We took risks. We were exposed but we tried. It makes sense that Bayern is part of the four best teams in Europe.”
http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Steve-Mandanda-c34177, the Marseille captain, also echoed Deschamps’ sentiments by saying that they came across the side that was clearly better than Marseille. However, Mandanda added that the players did their best.
“We came across what was better than us. The reality is that Bayern Munich is stronger than Olympique de Marseille.”
Interview by Le Parisien, Benoit Cheyrou also admitted that Bayern Munich were the better side over the course of the two legs. The midfielder said that the two-legged encounter against the Bundesliga giants was a good lesson for Marseille.
“In both legs, Bayern Munich have been the better side. Finally, we must admit that there was a difference of class between the two teams. The game gave us a footballing lesson.:
A cold and lucid statement, Cheyrou might have known that his team never really stood a chance when they were drawn with the Bavarians.
Bayern Munich were simply untouchable and the difference in class was evident in both games.
Now, Marseille should look to do something about their poor form in the league. As things stand, Les Phoceens are in 9th place in the Ligue 1 standings and are ten points away from Toulouse who occupy the last European berth.
The game against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena is also likely to be Marseille’s last game in Europe for at least until the next campaign.
