Didier Deschamps tells of Liverpool interest
Marseille manager Didier Deschamps has spoken out of his interview with Liverpool prior to Roy Hodgson taking up the post in July.
Deschamps said that he had a long meeting with Liverpool officials, but that circumstances and his loyalty to Marseille allowed him to make up his mind and he took the decision to stay at the French club.
Speaking at a press conference at Stamford Bridge ahead of the Marseille and Chelsea Champions League game, Deschamps said, "I am very proud that a club of the standing of Liverpool showed interest in me this summer."
Deschamps began his managing career at Monaco before he moved to Turin to coach Juventus. He moved to Marseille in 2009 and won the Ligue 1 title in his first season. It was Marseille’s first Ligue 1 title in 18 years.
The Marseille manager will have added to Liverpool’s growing problems this month. Hodgson saw his side knocked out of the Carling Cup to League Two side Northampton Town.
Liverpool have only won one Premier League match this season against West Brom at home and have only six points after six games so far this season. Hodgson is already under pressure.
The Liverpool board will be embarrassed by Deschamps comments. The Liverpool hierarchy have insisted that Hodgson has been their preferred appointment, despite links to managers like Jurgen Klinsmann and Deschamps in the past. This revelation will make the
board even more unpopular among fans and Hodgson will be disappointed if there is any truth to Deschamps comments.
The Marseille manager gave his reasons as to why he stayed at Marseille and added, "To be fair, it wasn't good timing. I had just started pre-season training with Marseille. I don't think the fans or the club officials would have been very pleased if after
two days back I was looking to join another club."
