Didier Drogba: Complacency is our biggest threat
Chelsea FC striker Didier Drogba has asked his teammates to avoid complacency in their game ahead of a crucial period in the English Premier League’s title race. Although Chelsea are 5 points clear at the top of the Premier League ahead of Arsenal and Manchester United, Drogba reckons the biggest danger is closer to home.
The striker expressed his views after captaining his side to a 4-1 victory against Spartak Moscow in the UEFA Champions League.
He said, “Really, to be honest, our most difficult opponent is us. If we lose points like last year we could be in trouble again. It is down to us to keep winning and keep increasing the gap. It is not easy. There are only a few teams who have done it before. When we lost against Manchester City, the reaction was good and that's what we have to try to achieve.”
Carlo Ancelotti welcomed back his ace striker on Wednesday night from European suspension to lead The Blues attack. UEFA handed him a 3-match ban after he earned a red-card in last season’s knockout tie against FC Internazionale.
Without John Terry and Frank Lampard, Drogba was the captain for the night and the Ivorian did justice to his duty by launching his side into the round of 16. Drogba also opened his goal scoring account in the Champions League this season when he successfully converted from the penalty spot.
The African star was delighted to be the skipper for the night, but reinstated that John Terry is indeed the rightful owner of the captain’s armband.
He said, "I am proud of being captain because I have been here seven years and have given everything for this club. It is nice, especially at Stamford Bridge in front of all the fans and in a Champions League game, but it is better to win. John doesn't need to ask for the armband back, it is his.”
After securing qualification in the next round of the Champions League, Chelsea make an arduous trip to Anfield in the Premier League to face a resurgent Liverpool side.
The Reds have won their last two matches this season and will be hoping to beat the English champions as well; however, Drogba is wary of the potential threat The Reds can cause to The Blues title defence, and expects a tough fight from the home team.
