Didier Drogba on Chelsea’s title defence: “It's not finished yet”
Chelsea FC striker Didier Drogba has spoken about his side’s ambition to retain their domestic crown.
The Ivorian was of the opinion that not all was lost despite Chelsea’s poor performances in recent weeks. The Blues, who at one stage were leading the Premier League race by 5 points, are now 3rd in the table on 30 points,
behind Manchester United and Arsenal FC.
Arsenal occupy 1st place in the English Premier League table with 32 points. United are 2nd
with 31 points, but crucially have a game in hand.
The west-Londoners have been nowhere near their playing best in the past month and the results speak the truth. Chelsea have just managed a single win in their last 6 league games, while scoring only 5 points off the possible 18.
The English Champions have also leaked needless goals at the back, while being unable to convert the opportunities up front. In their past 6 domestic meetings, Carlo Ancelotti’s men have netted in just 3 goals, while conceding
8.
However, Drogba believes that the Blues can take over their title rivals if they manage to win their upcoming matches. Chelsea enter a critical period of December, where they will face top sides in consecutive weeks of action.
Their Sunday’s visit to Tottenham Hotspur is also termed as a tricky one; the Blues have not managed to claim 3 points at White Hart Lane, since 2005.
Didier was wary that Spurs were a force to be reckoned with, when they play at The Lane.
He said, “Maybe everyone will expect us to lose on Sunday but it could be different. I see Tottenham as genuine title rivals. They're having a good season and there is no reason why they can't challenge. Chelsea used to beat
them regularly but things change, that's life. It is up to us to make it happen.”
Chelsea then host bitter rivals Manchester United at Stamford Bridge on 19th of December, before, once again, making a trip to North London to face Arsenal on 27th.
Last season’s Premier League Golden Boot winner hoped that his side will emerge triumphant in the key encounters during the festive period, to once again reclaim top spot in the table.
He added, “Obviously these three games are not coming at the right time for us but they will change the situation we're in now if we win them. It's not finished yet. It's a difficult moment for us but this is the kind of thing
that can happen to many teams. It's rare for Chelsea to have a period like this and I hope it's going to get better.”
