Nero wanted a large palace.  In order for his desire to come to pass, land needed to be cleared.

He either personally started the fires or he ordered them started.

To divert blame, he credited the Christians with the starting of the fire.

Did he fiddle while Rome burned?  Nero was crazy; he just may have done so....

I am not aware of any of our leaders that want to expand our borders...or his/her home.....

Actually no, nero was actively directing fire fighting effords. His political enemies said he was playin his Lyre while Rome burned. The more things change the more they stay the same.
