Hi all. 2-months prior to school ending in Sac., CA I had to pull my kids out of a Charter School. Was told to file a R-4 affidavit. House was in foreclosure, got busy trying to save our home, and never did file it. Am I in trouble? What to do? Prior to leaving the charter sch. I ask all the teachers to give me summer assignments for the kids in all core subjects. They worked on those assignments during the last 2-months prior to school ending. They did really well, but the fact remains, I didn't file the R-4. My oldest starts 9th grade this coming fall, my youngest starts 8th grade. Not certain if they will be attending public or to be homeschooled. I need outside assistance if kids are to be homeschooled, because I will have to also work outside of the home (part time) Please advise as to what to do? Thank you in advance.

  1. You may want to take a year off from homeschooling. Although I think homeschooling is great, you just can't do it all. If you want an alternative, try the k-12 online schools.

  2. I believe in Home School and definitely encourage it. I hope you kept good records of all the assignments (classes) that your children finished. I would inform the school board in your area that you are (have been) home schooling your children. If you have any problems you can contact the Home School Legal Defense, I have the link below. You can set up your home school schedule according to your work schedule. Just make sure they get the required hours of school they need. Most states require 180 days for completions of a grade. Also, go to the Home School.com below and click on the groups tab to find other home schoolers in your area. They may be able to help out with your work schedule. You watch their children and they may be able to watch your children. Only a suggestion.  If you need further help in setting up for home school please contact me through my web site Christian Home Schoolers resources below. I will try to help you as much as I can.

  3. No worries!  You're OK!

Fist things first.  The name of the form has changed from "R-4" to "Private School Affidavit (PSA).  That change occurred this past year.

Second, the PSA is filed between October 1 and October 15 of each year.  If you do not use a credentialed tutor (credentialed for your kids' grade levels) or enroll them in a public school ISP or private school PSP (formerly a private school ISP), you will file a PSA at that time. .

Be sure to sign up for the email list and Clickschooling as well.

    All the best.

  4. You are not prepared to homeschool your kids. I would send them back to public school, unless the school is so bad that their mental health is at risk.
