I didn't graduate high school or get my GED (long story). I'm very intelligent but encountered a number of family problems and other obstacles in the past 8 years. I'm 18 and want to start over by going to a JC. Can I get any type of grants to help me along regardless?

(i live in california by the way)

  1. You're all wrong. YOU DO NOT need a diploma or a GED to start going to community college. I know this for a fact....I'm doing it now.

  2. I understand your problems. My advice is simple -- try (just try) to  take the GED test and get the scores on paper.

Then, take up some college-level independent study courses (say a 2-3 credit foundation course) or a CLEP exam and present the scores to a financial adviser.

    This will prove 2 things:

    - you're a high school graduate (requisite for college)

    - you're capable for college and college-level study

The proof is in showing that you can do it, which should get you the finances you need. Good luck!

  3. just take the GED proficiency equivalent test. apply to JC, apply for fin. aid.

Yes, they have need based grants.

  4. You aren't going to be able to start college w/o getting a high school diploma or the equivalent.

  5. In CALIFORNIA, which is where the asker is from, you DO NOT have to have a diploma or GED to attend school.  YOU MUST, HOWEVER, pass the ATB (Ability to Benefit) exam.  One of our campuses is in California, and students who enroll but have not completed their GED must attend this campus, and must pass this test.  It is actually not an easy test.  Almost all of them stated the GED Test was easier (once they took both).  So for those of you arguing, please remember each state has their own academic guidelines.

Back to the question, once you have completed your ATB test and are accepted into school, you will want to try and take your GED test ASAP.  You will receive Title IV funding, but a limited amount, until you have obtained a GED or diploma.

So, yes, you can get funding, and probably enough to cover all or most of community college, but do yourself a favor, and finish your GED or diploma as well, if you are going to pursue anything other than an Associate degree.

    Best of Luck

  6. You'll need to get your GED before you can apply to a community college. Just take the test and then meet with a financial adviser and they'll help you find scholarships or grants tailored to your needs, or help you apply for student loans.
