Died at 74: Miami Dolphins mourn former president Eddie Jones’ demise – NFL News
The Miami Dolphins are mourning loss of their former president, Eddie Jones, who died on Wednesday morning at the age of 74 but the team did not disclose cause of the official’s death until filling of this report.
Eddie served Dolphins in various capacities since joining as vice president of administration and finance in 1988 through to his retirement as president in 2005.
Dolphins promoted him to be the executive vice president and general manager of the team in 1990. He became president in 1996 and remained so until the end of the season 2005, when he quit the league.
The official had many achievements to his credit during his long association with the team but the most successful stint was his tenure with the former Hall of Fame coach, Don Shula. It was one of the most successful eras of the team.
Don in his remarks said Eddie had been an influential figure in the team and helped build Dolphins as a winning unit.
He said:
"I've always felt teamwork in all phases of the operation was the key to building a winning team and Eddie Jones was the consummate team player."
The team owner, Wayne Huizenga, has also praised the former president for his contribution towards building the Dolphins’ organisation.
He said:
"He certainly could be a competitor as I found out across a conference table when I was negotiating to buy the Dolphins, and later on the golf course during our many rounds together. But what set him apart was his kindness and warmth."
Jones, a former Air Force veteran, had also served the New Orleans Saints. As a matter of fact, he started his National Football League (NFL) career from Saints in 1968, when he joined the team as a business manager. From 1982 to 1985,
he served them as president.
Meanwhile, Dolphins and other teams’ members who somehow have been known to the official during his NFL tenure, in their messages to the grieved family, have offered complimentary thoughts about his contribution towards development of
the professional league.
Jones has left behind his wife Marilyn three children and five grandchildren.
