Diego Cadena, Jose Trujillo and Michael Dunphy qualify for Round 4 at Quiksilver Surf Open Acapulco
Mexico’s Diego Cadena, his fellow countryperson Jose Trujillo and America’s Michael Dunphy secured their spot in the fourth round (Round of 32) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 4-Star Quiksilver Surf Open Acapulco after managing to earn
top honours in their respective Round 3 (Round of 64) heats that went down at Playa Revolcadero in Acapulco, Mexico, on Thursday, July 19.
America’s Dane Anderson, Mexico’s Bias Bacardo and Venezuela’s Jean Schaffar were successful in advancing through into the next round of the competition as well after earning second-place finish in their respective Round 3 heats.
The Salulita-based Cadena remained the top Mexican performer of the day, getting the better of his fellow countryperson Angelo Lozano, America’s Anderson and his compatriot Evan Thompson in the seventh heat of Round 3.
Despite the demanding surfing conditions keeping the four surfers from getting lucky with the waves, Cadena registered a heat-total of 10.53 points to emerge triumphant.
“I’m happy, at home I have a wave at home that is similar to this,” Cedena said. “It asks you for a lot. I think I’m used to it. I just tried my best to make my heat and find two waves that will give me the score. That’s all you need.”
Anderson made the Round 4 cut as well after finishing with a heat-total of 9.00 points, while Thomson and Lozano were forced to leave the competition field after finishing with a heat-total of 7.20 and 6.76 points respectively.
The next heat saw Trujillo use his local knowledge of the ways effectively enough to reach a heat-total of 9.97 points in conditions that made any score close to a double-digit figure a huge accomplishment. As a result of his remarkable effort, Trujillo
claimed victory in the heat and confidently advanced to the next round.
Bacardo accompanied his compatriot into the next round as well after securing second position through a two-wave total of 5.94 points, while America’s Nic Hdez and Hawaii’s Liam McNamara rounded out the third and fourth positions respectively, consequently
finding themselves eliminated from the competition.
Dunphy, the top seed in this year’s Quiksilver Surf Open Acapulco, did justice to his repute by making the most of the improved conditions that were brought in by the building tide. Exhibiting a series of powerful turns on a couple of juicy waves, he posted
a 6.67 and 7.17 on the score-board to finish with a heat-total of 13.84 points.
s******r finished behind him in second place with a two-wave total of 8.73 points, which carried him through into the next round.
Hawaii’s Koa Rothman and his fellow countryperson Morgan Faulkner finished with a  heat-total of 5.40 and 4.50 points respectively, which consequently led to their ejection from the contention for the event title.
