Diego Godin completes Athletico Madrid switch
Diego Godin has told of his delight at joining Atheltico Madrid after formally completing his transfer from La Liga rivals Villarreal. The central defender said that he is aiming to pick up major trophy’s with last season’s UEFA Europa League champions.
After joining Villareal in 2007, the Uruguay international quickly established himself as a mainstay in the first team. He has joined Athletico for an initial fee of eight million euros and has signed a five-year deal with his new club. He told reporters that: "I want to do well at this club and give titles to the fans. I'm at one of the biggest clubs in Spain and Europe. This opportunity is a challenge for me. I bring many things and want to help a great group here. Winning the Europa League demonstrated that they are a great team, it was not won by chance."
Seeking more trophies
The 24-year-old Godin revealed his hopes that he can help the team win more silverware to add to their triumph in the continental competition. He said that: "I hope I can help Atletico to continue winning titles. We know that the struggle in the league will be very hard; the goal is to be in the Champions League."
Godin added that he had spoken with Athletico striker and his international team-mate Diego Forlan about what is was like to play for the Spanish capital club. He said that: "Diego told me that Atletico is a great team, you demand a lot and want to win every game. He stressed that if you give your all on the field and strive in every game, fans will recognise it."
The defender has been capped 43 times by Uruguay and helped his country to a fourth-place finish at the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa.
