Diego Magdaleno: My aim is to become World featherweight champion by year end – Boxing news
Diego Magdaleno, the current NABF super featherweight champion, in a pre-bout interview, stated that he will not lose his confidence by the fact that his opponent is a southpaw adding that he wants to become a world featherweight champion and will most probably
get a title shot by the end of year 2012.
Diego, 25, is scheduled to defend his gold against the Mexican veteran Fernando Beltran. The 10-round bout will be televised on Showtimes’ ShoBox series on Friday March 23, 2012. The ring for the event will be setup at Casino Del Sol situated in Tucson,
Arizona, United States and the whole pay-per-view is being promoted and organised by Bob Arum of Top Rank.
The duo, just a few hours before the bout, shared their thoughts and put forth the media personnel their sheer confidence in winning it. Diego, the current NABF champion, is also on a long undefeated win streak. The American southpaw has been in a total
21 bouts and impressively emerged victorious in all the encounters.
Diego successfully nailed Gilberto Sanchez Leon via technical knockout to become the NABF super featherweight champion and since then has authoritatively defended his gold against Alejandro Perez and Emmanuel Lucero. The young lad’s Friday night engagement
is basically his third title defence.
Diego, who is considered as a favourite at the moment, enthusiastically said, “Fighting a lefty won’t be an issue. My movement is the key for me to create openings against any opponent. So we’re prepared for this. My goal is to be the 130-pound world champion.
I hope to earn a mandatory title shot by the end of this year, but first I have to take care of business here.”
The world number seven Diego’s Friday night challenger, Fernando, also known as the ‘Wary’ or ‘Pinocho’, though has an upper hand as far as the experience is concerned yet is currently facing a tough time in his career since he has faced three losses in
last five bouts.
Fernando, the former IBF Latino featherweight champion, seemed pretty confident at his championship engagement and said, “I have experience and Diego Magdaleno does not. You can’t substitute for experience. He’s also never fought a lefthander and I am a
natural southpaw. This is not about Diego Magdaleno. I’ve been training since Jan. 3 and I am prepared for anything.”
Beltran has been in a total 45 bouts and has emerged as a victor in 36. He has collected 20 of his wins by knockout as compared to Diego’s seven. The event will be co-headlined by the non-title eight-round bout between Yordenis Ugas and Juan Garcia.
