Diego Matos trounces Alexander Satschko in the initial qualifier – Rio De Janeiro Challenger 2012
Brazilian contender, Diego Matos, battled against the German senior, Alexander Satschko, in the initial qualifier of the Peugeot Tennis Cup held at the clay courts of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The local contender consolidated his
straight sets win, 7-6(4), 7-6(1), after a tough battle in nearly two hours and 30 minutes on eve of Saturday.
The 24-year-old Brazilian challenger broke his rival’s first serve and crushed his assurance right at the beginning of the match. He took note of the opportunity at hand and stamped a 2-love lead by the end of the second game.
Gradually, the German started to gain momentum and responded back by cashing Matos’ serve in the fourth game. This response triggered further and the score line evened out after every alternate game. The two players gave each other a tough time and dissolved
their rival's serves but sustained their proactive action. This trend continued until the end and the opener terminated with a 7-6(4) after a close tiebreaker round.
The right-hander German veteran had an average initial serve of 53 percent, bagging away 14 of 23 first and 11 of 20 second delivery points. He secured just two of six serve breaks and his rival attained two of three. The Brazilian
participant manifested a comparatively better first serve precision of 67 percent, converting 25 of 36 first and seven of 18 second delivery points.
Both the players held their initial serves in the second set, preserving their proactive and agile action plan. Surprisingly, none of the players were able to cash away any of the serve break. The set followed the similar pattern
as before but Matos took advantage of his home ground and swiftly glided past the tiebreaker, terminating the set with a 7-6(1) score.
The 31-year-old German completely lost hope and double faulted twice at the critical moments in the set and had an average initial serve of 56 percent with 18 of 25 first and 12 of 20 second delivery points. The Brazilian player
took the lead by firing five aces and had a good first serve precision of 72 percent. He attained 22 of 26 first and six of 10 second serve points. Unfortunately, none of the players capitalized on a single break points bestowed.
