Diego Milito Extends Inter Milan Stay
Diego Milito has committed his future to Inter Milan by signing an extension to his contract that keeps him with the club until 2014. The striker’s deal had been set to expire in 2013, but he has added an extra year to his stay.
The Argentinean international will be looking to continue his great form under new manager Rafael Benitez. Milito told his club’s official website of his delight at extending his stay. He said: "I will always be grateful to a great club like Inter for choosing me, and to president (Massimo) Moratti for his faith in me."
Treble-winning season
Milito joined the Serie A giants from Genoa last summer after finishing second in the Italian scoring charts behind Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Questions over his ability to continue his rich vein of scoring form were silenced after he netted 30 goals in all competitions. Milito placed himself among the best strikers on the continent as he helped Jose Mourinho’s side claim a historic treble of the Scudetto, Soppa Italia, and UEFA Champions League.
Mourinho deployed Milito as his main striker, flanked by Goran Pandev and Samuel Eto’o, with Wesley Sneijder behind him. With that level of support, the Argentinean couldn’t fail to find the net. In his debut year in Europe’s elite competition, he scored six goals – including two in the final against Bayern Munich - while he struck 22 times in 33 starts in the league and turned provider for his teammates for another four goals. He also proved vital to Inter’s cup triumph as he netted the only goal in the final over Roma.
At international level, Milito was part of Argentina’s squad, which took part in the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. However, he struggled to make many appearances in the completion with coach Diego Maradona favouring Gonzalo Higuain of Real Madrid as the main striker.
