Diego Sebastian cruises past Andrea Arnaboldi into the main draw – Palermo Challenger 2011
Argentinean, Diego Sebastian, upsets higher ranked Andrea Arnaboldi of Italy in straight sets to earn a spot in the main round of the Palermo Challenger. The local crowd was struck with grief as their home boy was undone by the
Argentine teenager on Monday, October 3rd.
The first set saw a close fight between the two with Sebastian taking the set 7-5. Arnaboldi couldn’t recover from his bad start and lost the battle to the teenager in an hour and 33 minutes. Sebastian managed to clean sweep the
Italian by pocketing the second set 6-1 and placing himself in the main draw of the event.
Left-handers are supposed to have a subtle advantage over right-handed players because of their difference in angle of serves and shots. Sebastian didn’t weigh in this fact much and went out there with a clear mindset of winning
this game. His staggering display of backhand and forehand shots with a spice of drop shots somewhere in the middle of the rallies was a treat to watch. Arnaboldi tried to regain his composure and bounce back but Sebastian had other plans. The Argentine sneaked
pass the first set with a shear quality display of skill and talent. He saved 7 break points and finally winning the second break point to seal the set.
Arnaboldi was as if a mere spectator in the second. He couldn’t focus on his game and was rambling across the pitch as he was still wondering about the shocking first set loss. He was not able to save a single break point and was
far ahead from his best. Sebastian just sailed past Arnaboldi in the second set and took the set with a comprehensive 6-1 score line. Italy had seen their experienced tennis star in despair. The Argentine secured all the break points and won 67% of the total
points in second set.
Surprisingly there were no aces scored throughout the match since both players tackled their opponent’s serves perfectly, though Sebastian put up a better defence in the second set. Arnaboldi could only see the ball sail pass him.
He was dragged across the corners and his reaction play was sluggish. Sebastian played the second set at his pace and eventually ended the miserable run for the Italian by sealing a place for himself in the main draw.
