The Brazilian indicates that he will be leaving Vicente Calderon soon for Germany.
The attacking midfielder joined Wolfsburg from Juventus for a club record transfer fee of 15.5 million Euros. He made a total of 33 appearances and scored 5 goals for Bianconeri before being shipped off to Germany.
The Brazilian had a turbulent time in his second spell in Bundesliga; he was fined several thousand Euros for breaking a curfew set by his manager. After falling out with his manager Felix Magath and the gaffer told him straight
up that he has no future with the club.
Diego was then loaned out to Atletico Madrid; he seemed to fit in well with Roja Blancos formation, he scored 3 goals in 30 appearances for Diego Simeone’s side and went on to lift the UEFA Europa League with his new club.
Despite having an impressive season at Vicente Calderon, Diego was unable to secure a permanent deal at the club, with Atletico struggling for finances it was hard for them to cough up a few million quid for the former Werder Bremen
man. Diego himself admitted that he will be going back to Germany.
He revealed that the time spent in Madrid was special for him, as he won a major trophy and helped the team win it. The former Juventus player thanked all the fans and players for their support throughout his loan spell.
"Firstly, I want to thank all the fans of Atletico for all the support that they have given to me. Everything has been very special for me and that was due to my success at this club. I'll never forget my time here and every moment
the fans have spent with me has been special,” he is quoted as saying.
The midfielder also stated that he will cherish the time spent with the Madrid club. Although he tried his best to get a permanent deal at the club but the officials were not willing to invest in him.
"I will always keep them in my heart. I tried my best to make the club invest in me and make me stay permanently. But, anyway, things have been good here," he further added.
Diego now returns to his parent club Wolfsburg, where he has to face his manager Felix Magath, whom he fell out with before joining Atletico Madrid. Whether the German tactician gives him a chance to prove himself remains to be
seen.
