Dierry Jean becomes NABF light welterweight champion after nailing Lanardo Tyner – Boxing News
Dierry Jean, the former Canada-Quebec Boxing Council (CQB) light welterweight champion, startled the whole boxing world by defending his win streak and grabbing the vacant NABF light welterweight title after outwitting heavily experienced Lanardo Tyner,
in a 12-round bout held on May 19, 2012.
The duo headlined the bout-stacked pay-per-view which was organised and promoted by Camille Estephan of Eye of the Tiger Management. The ring for the showdown was set up at Holiday Inn situated in Pointe-Claire, Quebec, Canada and the night was co-headlined
by the NABA light heavyweight title bout between Nicholson Poulard and Lionell Thompson.
Jean, 30, was entering the ring with a flawless resume and was seriously overshadowed by Tyner’s experience. Dierry was in his 22nd career bout and boasted an undefeated streak.
The Canadian proud has never lost even a single bout and has collected 14 of his wins by knocking the opponent out cold. In addition, this was Jean’s very first bout with an apex title up for grabs.
Despite the fact that Jean was visibly outclassed by Tyner’s resume, there was one very interesting rather intimidating factor that somewhat convinced the critics to shift the odds in favour of the Montreal proud.
Dierry has collected his last three wins over heavily experienced pugilists, brawlers who possessed more experience than Lanardo. Tyner, 36, on the other hand was entering in his career’s 35th bout and boasted 25 wins with just 15 via knockout.
Lanardo was coming from a three-bout lose streak which substantially reduced the odds in his favour. Moreover, all the three pugilists were of less experience than Tyner, an aspect that made the odds-maker diffident as to whether Lanardo can grab a win over
Jean or not. Things were started by Tyner who rattled Jean in the very first round with a huge left hook.
After getting beaten up in the first half of the first round, Dierry started to make a comeback and at the end of the first round was dominating the bout. This scenario continued till the end of the 12-round showdown and after the final ring of the bell,
all the three designated judges unanimously gave 119-109 to Jean.
After the impressive win, Jean stated, “It was a h**l of a fight. This was the big leagues for me. I hurt him a lot, but he had so much experience. I couldn’t finish him, but I knew it was going to be a tough fight because he’s fought good guys…Alvarez,
tough guys you know? I was hoping that I was going to be the first one [to finish him] but I really liked the way I fought.”
The win has opened a new door for the surging Jean who has now captured media’s due attention. This was Dierry’s 22nd career win whereas Tyner has unfortunately grabbed his eighth career loss.
