Diesel Malc wins Coral Greyhound Olympic for trainer Mick Fawsitt, Cloheena Cash disappoints
3/1 favourite, Diesel Malc won the £5,000 Coral Greyhound Olympic at Hove, reinforcing trainer, Mick Fawsitt’s, confidence in him. Prior to the race, Fawsitt had said that his pupil gave good value for his money and was well supported.
He had competed in a field consisting of five others, including Pennys Viking, Romeo Amerigo, favourite Cloheena Cash, Jazz Apollo and Stemart Knut.
The race was Diesel Malc’s from the beginning as he took hold of the lead in 4.03 seconds. He was followed by Romeo Amerigo who was in second place initially and got very close to the lead too, but could not catch up with Diesel Malc.
At the second last bend, Dave Firmager‘s Romeo Amerigo lost pace and the gap between Diesel Malc and him widened as he was passed by Dean Childs’ Pennys Viking.
At the final bend, Diesel Malc was still leading and even though he slowed down in places, he won the 515m race by three lengths in 29.56 seconds.
He was followed by Pennys Viking and Romeo Amerigo in place, showing positions respectively.
Despite being the favourite, Norah McEllistrim’s Cloheena Cash failed to please after making a disappointing start. This is upsetting considering that last year’s final’s favourite, Ballymac William, actually won the final.
Diesel Malc, son of Ballymac Maeve, on the other hand, seemed all geared up to win, starting from his quick start to his firm grasp on the lead towards the end.
Prior to the match too, he has had a commendable career.
He was won eight races in the last one year. At the semi final of the Coral Greyhound Olympics that took place on 23rd June, 2011, he started off fast and soon led, maintaining this lead till the very end of the 515m race where he defeated Jazz
Apollo.
He was in good shape in the opening round of the Coral Greyhound Olympics as well, but could not attain a clear lead and remained in the crowd for the most part. Despite this he finished second only to Droopys Greg.
