Question:

Diesel engine running on vegetable oil: What process to prepare used restraunt cooking oil for Diesel engine?

For non-commercial private use: I'm planning a trial collection and processing of used cooking oil to run a 2.5Lturbo-diesel Pajero4wd. I just want to trial the viability and effort in the process of collection, filtering and preparation of used cooking oil before I proceed to add a second fuel tank and add components to my turbo-diesel motor. I'm considering either oil fuel or I sell and buy a different vehicle? Any websites or help greatly appreciated.

  1. this very thing was shown on Trucks on Powerblock TV so i would go to Powerblock Tv.com to get the episode or the tape that will show you what is involved and you do not have to get anything special to convert your truck to run the final product

or refer you to knowledgeable people who can.

  3. Here is a link shows how to make biodiesel.

  4. fattywagons.com cheapest and best heaters.

I filter my used oil cold with a old pair of pants(legs tied tight)

Let settle one week using only the oil above 2 inches from bottom of barrel. You can run 25% wvo with diesel with no heat.Anything over you must heat the fuel before injectors.

I filter oil cold to remove animal oils, they will cause problems. It can take 36 hours to filter 30 gals, but it will save your engine.

  5. dont mess with trying to make biodiesel. All you have to do is fillter the oil down to 5 micron's( you can get filters on ebay cheap) then heat the oil to 100* F. (I use a water heater element) And put in the tank.  thats it!

Your diesel fuel line will have sediment in them and the veg will clean this out of your lines and you will have replace your fuel filter a few time before its all out.

  6. Here's a great page on the subject

Generally you have four problems with waste vegetable oil:

    1. Particulate contamination.  You have to filter it.

    2. Viscosity.  Put veggie oil in the fridge, and the problem will become readily apparent!  That's why you need to heat it on the vehicle before it will flow.

    3. Water content.

    4. Acidity.

To solve the water content and acidity, you have to titrate and dry it (which is rather like the process to make biodiesel.) But you can skip that, if you don't mind risk to your injection system.
