can you possibly explain the reason technically or otherwise

In scientific terms, diesel produces about 40 megajoules of energy per litre, as opposed to about 35 for petrol. Diesel engines generate 10-20% lower CO2 emissions per mile than an equivalent petrol engine. In addition, diesel is cheaper to make and easier to store, being less prone to evaporation.

  1. Diesel is more expensive than petrol (gasoline) where I live in the US (and in most or all of the western US).

I cannot explain why, other than the refineries in the US are producing less diesel and more petrol.  But, why they choose to do this, I do not know.   My opinion and belief is: there is some political reason behind the price disparity, and that there is no technical reason.

  2. From what I've seen in California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Colorado and Nebraska, the price of diesel is about 15 - 20% higher than ordinary petrol.  It would seem that both are priced evenly when you consider only the chemical potential energy and not the number of gallons.
